BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 15 University of Michigan women's soccer team won for the seventh time in its last nine tries by blanking Indiana 1-0 Sunday afternoon (Oct. 10) at Armstrong Stadium. Junior Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South HS) did the damage early with the game-winner just 1:46 into the contest, and the Wolverine defense made the goal stand by allowing only eight Hoosier shots to secure U-M's sixth shutout victory of the season.
With less than two minutes drained off the clock, Heaton took a ball from freshman Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) inside the 18-yard box and fired a shot into the left corner of the goal past IU goalkeeper Lauren Fabbro to give Michigan the early momentum. The Wolverines looked to go up by two goals soon after, but freshman Jamie Artsis' (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) shot at 5:37 was stopped by Fabbro.
The Hoosiers finally got their offense going five minutes later, as they unleashed a flurry of corner kick attempts on the U-M defense. Fortunately, two shots by Kristen Zmijewski went wide and the Wolverines were able to clear out the other two balls. Both goalkeepers came up big for their respective teams in the latter stages of the half, as Fabbro collected a blast by Heaton at 29:53, and sophomore Megan Tuura (St. Pius X Catholic HS) made her first of four saves on a shot by Megan Pipkens at 33:30 before a stop on a Lindsay McCarthy attempt two minutes later.
Indiana came out of the halftime break and earned another corner kick opportunity in the 50th minute, but Kristen Radcliffe's header was blocked in front. Freshman Kandice McLaughlin (West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real HS) nearly gave Michigan an insurance score five minute later, but her attempt was saved by Fabbro.
Neither goalkeeper was challenged with a shot on goal for the remaining minutes of the game. Radcliffe tried to knot the score before time expired, but her shot at 89:51 sailed out of bounds and the Wolverines escaped with the victory.
The Wolverines (9-3-2, 6-1-1 Big Ten) continue their five-game road stretch Thursday (Oct. 14) against Oakland. The match is slated to start at 4 p.m. at the OU Soccer Field in Rochester, Mich.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On the game ... "We didn't play really well early on, but we improved in the second half. We had a difficult time settling the ball the entire game and it was pretty physical out there. We certainly didn't have a lot of opportunities on offense and spent a lot of time trying to get the ball down on the ground. But I thought we had a lot more quality opportunities than we did on Friday against Purdue."
On Therese Heaton's goal ... "We were on the counter-attack. We cleared it out and Therese took on a couple of defenders before taking the shot."
On Michigan's defense ... "We're certainly playing tough and every game we play is good experience. We're just trying to work out the kinks. Our defenders are providing good coverage and we always have someone backing someone else up back there."
