ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team has announced the signing of Megan Bowman (St. John, Ind./Lake Central HS) and Danielle Pflum (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville HS) as its 2003-04 recruiting class.
Bowman, a 6-1 middle blocker, is a physical player who led Lake Central High School to a sectional championship in the 2002 Indiana High School Athletic Association volleyball tournament. She led all high school volleyball players in Indiana with 159 block assists as a senior and was 15th in the state in block solos with 76. She also tied for 45th in kills with 221 and received honorable mention on the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association 2002 all-state team. Bowman is a member of the Dunes Volleyball Club in Michigan City, Ind.
Pflum, a 6-1 outside hitter, is a four-time member of the Junior National Team (1998-2001) and was a member of the Michiana High Performance team in 2001. She posted 334 kills and 60 blocks this season, led Martinsville High School to a sectional final of the 2002 IHSAA volleyball tournament and was named the StarWest Player of the Year. Pflum was an All-Conference Indiana selection and a member of the Indiana Junior All-Star team in 2001. She was named to the All-Metro South team in 2000 and 2001. Since 1998, she has been a member of the Circle City Volleyball Club, which also produced current U-M sophomore Jennifer Gandolph (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS) and freshman Ashley Buckingham (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove HS).
Michigan is currently 15-11 overall and 9-7 in the Big Ten Conference. The Wolverines are on the road at Purdue (Nov. 22) and at Illinois (Nov. 23) this weekend before closing out the regular season with home matches against No. 14 Wisconsin (Nov. 29) and Northwestern (Nov. 30).
Q U O T E S
Head Coach Mark Rosen On Megan Bowman ... "We're pretty fired up to get both of them. Megan is a middle blocker from Dunes Volleyball Club, which is about a 90-minute drive from her home. Because of that, she probably doesn't have as much club experience as other players, but she has a lot of raw potential which we are excited to develop once she gets here. She is a big, strong kid who is very physical and jumps very well. I think she still has a long way to develop in terms of arm swing, timing and nuances of the game, but I think she is going to be a very, very good athlete. Her personality is pretty intense, and she is kind of quiet. However, she is very competitive, and I think that will fit in well with our team."
On Danielle Pflum ... "Danielle is an outside hitter who plays for the same club team that Jennifer Gandolph and Ashley Buckingham came from, Circle City Volleyball Club, which is one of the best club teams in the Midwest if not the United States. She has been a key player for them. She is a good jumper and is pretty dynamic. She also has a good arm swing and is a real banger-type outside hitter. Her ball control needs to get a little better, but it is pretty solid right now. She comes from a small high school team that hasn't been very competitive, but this year they took a pretty big step with her being a senior. She was ranked 34th on a list of the top 100 recruits for the freshman class of 2003 and is a very respectable recruit nationally. Danielle has a really lively, very outgoing and very aggressive personality. She's really a fun person to be around."
On recruiting in the Midwest ... "We seem to be doing a lot of recruiting in Indiana. It's a very good volleyball state. The caliber of play at the high school and club level is very good. Obviously they feel comfortable staying in the Midwest and staying in the Big Ten. Both of these players were recruited pretty heavily across the Big Ten, so I think they knew that's where they would end up playing."
