Maloney Tabbed Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week

PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Sophomore goalkeeper Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) of the University of Michigan field hockey team has been named the Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced today (Monday, Oct. 7).

With Maloney's honor, four Michigan players have earned Big Ten Player of the Week awards in 2002. Junior forward April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) and junior defender Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) received the league's offensive and defensive awards, respectively, on Sept. 9, while senior forward Molly Powers (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) earned the offensive award on Sept. 16 and Sept. 30.
No. 2 Michigan (10-1, 2-0 Big Ten), currently on a nine-game winning streak, will travel to Iowa City, Iowa, this weekend for a pair of matches. The Wolverines open the weekend at 3 p.m. CDT on Friday (Oct. 11) against the No. 11 Iowa Hawkeyes in a Big Ten affair before taking on Southwest Missouri State in a non-conference game at noon CDT on Saturday (Oct. 12). Both contests will be staged at Grant Field on the campus of the University of Iowa.
