Time to Start Thinking About the NCAAs
Michigan is ranked first in the NCAA's West Region, according to the rankings release by the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Committee on Oct. 21. Sixteen teams make the NCAA Tournament, which begins on Saturday, Nov. 16 at four regional sites. The next regional rankings are due out on Monday, Nov. 4, and the field of teams will selected on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. Head coach Marcia Pankratz is a member of the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Committee and is the chair for the Mideast Region.
Big Ten Champs!
With the win over No. 6 Penn State (Oct. 25), the Wolverines have captured the Big Ten regular-season title, their third conference crown under head coach Marcia Pankratz. Michigan ran the table with a 6-0 record in Big Ten play, equaling the feat accomplished by the 2000 team, which also attained the Big Ten title by posting a 6-0 mark in league play.
Perfection
The Wolverines are the seventh team in Big Ten history to post a perfect record in conference play and have posted a 6-0 mark in two of the last three years. Iowa ran the table in 1982, '92, '95 and '96, while Northwestern accomplished the feat in 1988.
Winning Streak Snapped
Michigan had its school-record winning streak stopped at 14 with its loss to No. 1 Old Dominion (Oct. 26). The string of wins spanned eight weeks from Sept. 7-Oct. 25 and saw the Wolverines outscore their opposition by a 52-9 margin, including seven shutouts.
The Awards Keep Coming
Junior forward April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) became the fifth Wolverine in as many weeks to be named Big Ten Player of the Week, earning the league's offensive honor for the second time this season after posting a team-high three goals in last weekends split with No. 6 Penn State and No. 1 Old Dominion. Fronzoni, who also earned the honor on Sept. 9, leads the Big Ten with 16 goals and 36 points.
Gannon Moves Into the Top 10
Junior defender Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) has notched a point in four of her last five games, posting 6-3-15 totals. Gannon moved up to eighth place on Michigan's career assists chart with her 19th career helper at Penn State (Oct. 25) and also cracked the top 10 career points charts with her goal against Old Domionion (Oct. 26). Gannon has 28-19-75 totals to rank 10th in career points.
Triple Play
April Fronzoni has netted four goals in her last three games, scoring in each contest, and has notched a point in five of her last six outings, including four straight. Fronzoni, who leads the team with 16 goals and 36 points, is one goal and two points away from tying her career highs in both categories (17 goals and 38 points), established as a freshman in 2000. Fronzoni, who became the fourth player in Michigan field hockey history to amass 100 career points last weekend, currently sports 46-12-104 totals.
More on Fronzoni
April Fronzoni needs one goal to move into the top 10 of Michigan's single-season goal-scoring list.
Johnson & Johnson
Junior defender Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) posted her third multi-goal game of the season against Penn State (Oct. 25) and in the process, tied a career high for goals in a season (11), matching her total from a year ago. Johnson has 11-1-23 this season and is two points shy of matching her career high of 25, set during the 2001 campaign.
Inside the Numbers
The Wolverines have outscored their opponents 57-15 this season, an average of 3.30-0.87 goals per game ... U-M has held opponents to 10 shots or less in all but one of its outings and is outshooting its foes by a 323-107 margin this season. Michigan is averaging 19.0 shots per game while its opponents are posting 6.3 per contest ... The Wolverines are outscoring the opposition 29-7 in the first half and 26-7 in the second stanza.
