The Magic Number is 2
A win by Michigan in both of its games this weekend will clinch a share of the Big Ten regular-season title, its third league crown and second in the last three years. Should the Wolverines win both games and Penn State and Michigan State fall in one of their contests, Michigan will be crowned championship outright and be the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament.
I've got 11, can I get 12
Michigan continues to own one of the nation's longest winning streaks, having registered 11 straight wins, and enters the week tied with No. 4 Wake Forest and Lafayette for the longest active winning streak in the nation. Following is what the three schools are doing this week:
Team | Win Streak | This Week's Schedule |
Lafayette | 11 | at Delaware (Oct. 15), vs. Colgate (Oct. 19) |
No. 2 Michigan | 11 | at Indiana (Oct. 18), vs. Northwestern (Oct. 20) |
No. 4 Wake Forest | 11 | vs. No. 12 North Carolina (Oct. 20) |
Streaking
Michigan's 11-game winning streak is the second-longest in school history. The school record is 12, set during the 2000 campaign.
Road Trip
The Wolverines are on the road for five of their last six matches, making a pit stop in Ann Arbor to host Northwestern on Sunday (Oct. 20) for the team's annual Senior Day. Michigan's only other possible home contest could occur in the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, should U-M be selected as one of the four regional hosts.
Inside the Numbers
The Wolverines have outscored their opponents 45-10 this season, an average of 3.40-0.76 goals per game ... U-M has held opponents to fewer than 10 shots in 12 of its 13 outings and is outshooting its foes by a 265-81 margin this season. Michigan is averaging 20.4 shots per game while its opponents are posting 6.2 per contest ... The Wolverines are outscoring the opposition 22-3 in the first half and 21-7 in the second stanza.

Habit-Forming
Kristi Gannon became the fifth player to earn Big Ten Player of the Week honors with her defensive laurel this week. Gannon, who posted a goal and two assists against Southwest Missouri State on Saturday (Oct. 12), earned the award for the first time in her career and became the third consecutive U-M player to earn the conference weekly honor. Gannon, who netted her first marker of the year in the contest, also moved into U-M's top 10 list for career assists with her 18th. Gannon has a team-high seven helpers this season, the most single-season assists of her career.
Miss Consistent
April Fronzoni, who ranks second on the team with 12 goals, has netted at least one marker in each weekend this season. Fronzoni posted all of Michigan's goals in Friday's (Oct. 11) 2-0 win at No. 13 Iowa for her fourth multi-goal effort of the year. Fronzoni has accounted for all the U-M offense twice this season, including Michigan's 2-0 win at North Carolina to open the season.
Hats Off
Molly Powers recorded her second career hat trick in Saturday's (Oct. 12) 5-2 win over Southwest Missouri State, posting her fourth multi-goal game of the year. Powers, who leads the team with 13 markers, is two shy of her career high of 15, set as a sophomore in 2000. She has tallied seven goals in her last five games, recording at least one marker in four of those contests.
Blake... Australian for goal-scorer
Sophomore midfielder Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary's Anglican School) netted her third goal of the season in Saturday's (Oct. 12) win over Southwest Missouri State, surpassing her goal total from 23 games last year. Blake has three goals and one assist for seven points this season, one point shy of the 2-4-8 she recorded in 2001.
The Wall
Sophomore goalkeeper Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) saw her shutout streak fall at 302:14 on Saturday (Oct. 12) against Southwest Missouri State when the Bears netted a goal 59:05 into the contest. Maloney's streak spanned five games, including three shutout victories, and saw her move into the top five for single-season shutouts at Michigan with her sixth of the season. Maloney has a victory in each of her last 11 appearances, tied for the longest winning streak in the country, and has a career record of 19-2, including a 12-1 mark this year.
Free Hits

IF YOU'VE BEEN WITH US ALL SEASON, THESE MAY LOOK FAMILIAR...
Home Sweet Home
The Wolverines are a perfect 9-0 this season at Ocker Field. Michigan has won the last 11 matches in front of its home crowd, dating back to last season's NCAA Regional. U-M captured all nine games during its school-record nine-game homestand from Sept. 7-Oct. 4.
Defending the Realm
The Wolverines own a 9-1 record in non-conference play this season and extended a win streak with their victory against Southwest Missouri State. Michigan has not dropped a non-conference game to an opponent from another conference except the ACC since the 1999 campaign, posting 28 straight wins. U-M's last loss to a non-ACC opponent was on Sept. 12, 1999, when it dropped a 3-0 contest to James Madison. Michigan's next non-conference action is on Saturday, Oct. 26, when it faces No. 3 Old Dominion in State College, Pa.
Working Overtime
Michigan is 2-0 in overtime this season and has won the last five games that have gone into an extra stanza, dating back to last season. The Wolverines have played in at least two overtime games the last six years, including four during the 2001 campaign.
Down, But Not Out
Michigan has given up the game's first goal in five outings this season but has come back to win on four occassions, scoring multiple unanswered goals. Against Ball State on Sept. 8, U-M netted five straight goals to win by a 5-1 margin, while on Sept. 14 against No. 14 Boston College, the Wolverines scored six straight goals en route to a 6-2 win over the Eagles. In the Sept. 15 2-1 (ot) win over Connecticut, U-M notched two straight goals after falling behind, then repeated the feat in the 2-1 (ot) win against No. 12 Northeastern on Sept. 22.
