Gannon Named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week

PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Sophomore defender Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS), a member of the University of Michigan field hockey team, has been named the Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced today (Monday, Oct. 14).

With Gannon's honor, five Michigan players have earned Big Ten Player of the Week awards this season, including three in the last three weeks. Junior forward April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) and junior defender Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) received the league's offensive and defensive awards, respectively, on Sept. 9; senior forward Molly Powers (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) earned the award on Sept. 16 and Sept. 30; and sophmore goalkeeper Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) was named Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 7.
No. 2 Michigan (12-1, 3-0 Big Ten), currently on an 11-game winning streak, will face Indiana and Northwestern this week in an attempt to lock up a share of the Big Ten regular-season title. The Wolverines will travel to Bloomington, Ind., on Friday (Oct. 18) for a 6 p.m. EST/CDT matchup with Indiana before returning to Ann Arbor for their final home contest of the year at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 20).
