Hortillosa Named Big Ten Freshman of the Year

Hortillosa, who earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors on one occasion this season, posted three goals and one assist for seven points in Big Ten play to rank ninth in the conference in scoring and top the scoring charts among freshmen. Overall, Hortillosa has netted eight goals, including a conference-high four game-winners, and tallied two assists to rank second on the team in scoring. She is the second Wolverine in as many seasons to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors, as sophomore defender Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) received the laurel last season.
Gannon was one of three Michigan players on the All-Big Ten first team, joining sophomore defender Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) and senior defender Catherine Foreman (Happy Valley, South Australia/Westminster School) on the 13-member squad. Gannon, who earned the honor for the season straight season, ranked third in Big Ten scoring with five goals and two assists, and enters this weekend's Big Ten Tournament tied for the team lead in points with 8-4-20 totals. Johnson, one of three unanimous selections to the squad, is tied with Gannon for the team's scoring lead and posted four goals and an assist in conference play, while Foreman, Michigan's all-time leader in assists has tallied 1 14 15 this season, including four helpers in Big Ten action.
Four Wolverines -- Hortillosa, sophomore forward April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS), junior midfielder Jessica Rose (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) and senior goalkeeper Maureen Tasch (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) were named to the 11-member All-Big Ten second team.
Michigan (13-4, 4-2 Big Ten), ranked fifth in the latest STX/NFHCA National Division I Coaches Poll, opens postseason play by participating in the 2001 Big Ten Tournament on Friday through Sunday (Nov. 2-4) at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. The No. 3-seeded Wolverines, two-time defending champions of the Big Ten Tournament, will face the host school and sixth-seeded Wildcats at 2 p.m. CST on Friday at Lakeside Field on the Northwestern campus.
