Gannons Help U-M Overpower American in Home Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) scored two goals and added two assists, leading the University of Michigan field hockey team to a 6-1 thrashing of American University on Saturday (Sept. 9) at Ocker Field. With her six points, Gannon increased her career total to 93 to move into third place on U-M's all-time list.
The Wolverines' offense was on all cylinders, scoring 10 minutes into the contest when Kelli Gannon was set up by freshman Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS), marking the first time the sisters have combined for a score in their careers.
Sophomore Molly Powers (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season at 12:50, with the helper going to Kelli Gannon. Kelli Gannon, assisted by Courtney Reid (South Deerfield, Mass./Northfield Mt. Hermon HS), put another goal in four minutes later to up the Wolverine advantage to 3-0.
With 27 seconds left in the half Kristi Gannon capped off an outstanding first half, scoring on a penalty corner. Assisting on the goal were Catherine Foreman (Happy Valley, S. Australia/Westminister) and Reid.
April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) and Jessica Rose (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) finished off the scoring for the Maize and Blue with second-half goals.
American eluded the shutout when Erin Whiteside put an unassisted goal past Maureen Tasch (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) with four minutes remaining. Tasch made two saves in the morning contest.
Head coach Marcia Pankratz was pleased with her team's performance. "I'm happy with the way we finished our play today. We got a lot of our kids some quality playing time and we're getting better as the season is progressing."
The Wolverines will take on Ohio University tomorrow (Sunday, Sept. 10) at Ocker Field at noon.
