Iowa Wins Defensive Battle Over Michigan State
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Iowa defeated No. 19-ranked Michigan State 2-0 today (Friday, Nov. 3) to advance to the semifinals of the Big Ten Conference Field Hockey Tournament at Michigan's Ocker Field. The No. 3 seed Hawkeyes and No. 6 seed Spartans each had four shots for the game, and Iowa was able to score one goal in each half for the win.
Iowa (11-7) took the lead with 8:11 left in the first half when Natalie Dawson scored on Iowa's lone shot of the half, beating Michigan State goalkeeper Mireille Evans. The game remained 1-0 heading into halftime.
Both teams kept the ball in the midfield for most of the game, but the second half had a few more scoring chances for both sides. Iowa had three shots in the second half, but it was the goal by Rebekah Heavrin that gave the Hawkeyes a 2-0 lead. Heavrin had an easy tap-in at the 22:15 mark after Susan Gibson shot a dribbler toward the net and Evans came out of the cage and misplayed the ball, giving Heavrin the rebound goal.
The Spartans' offense had more firepower in the second half as well but was unable to convert. MSU (11-8) fired two shots inside the circle and had three penalty corners in the half. Iowa goalkeeper Barbara Weinberg made three saves for the shutout.
Iowa will play No. 2 seed Penn State tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 4) at 2 p.m. in the second semifinal game at Ocker Field.

Q U O T E S
Iowa Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum
On the game ... "I felt both teams were a little big nervous in the beginning of the game. We really wanted to try and keep Michigan State from getting the momentum at the beginning of the game, and I was happy about that. Each team had four shots, which is not a lot for a Big Ten game, so offensive opportunities were minimal."
On matching up against Penn State ... "They have some really skilled players, and I know they have suffered some injuries lately, but that is not going to change the way we prepare for the game."
Michigan State Head Coach Michele Madison
On the game ... "I thought it was a beautiful midfield game. I thought the possession and field hockey was nice. We didn't have a lot of action in either end of the circles and that is why is wasn't a spectator game. There wasn't a lot of excitement, and we are not used to that. Both teams played control hockey, and Iowa took advantage of their opportunities and we didn't."
