WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team created numerous scoring chances in the second half of the match but could not capitalize as the Wolverines lost 1-0 at Wake Forest on Saturday (Nov. 13) in the second round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship.
Michigan (17-6-1) outshot Wake 14-12 on the game but, more than that, controlled the play for most of the second half. Wake Forest's goaltender made a pair of spectacular saves late in the game to preserve the lead. With 21:15 remaining, Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) slid behind the defense all alone seven yards out, but the keeper made a diving catch and held on to the rebound. At 19:45, Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) unloaded a blast from 25 yards out and the Wake keeper dove to her left to make the stop.
Wake Forest (16-6-0) tallied the game's first and only goal at 63:58. The Demon Deacons played a long ball into the Michigan end which appeared to be heading over the endline to the right of the Wolverine net, but Joline Charlton raced in and headed the ball back into play. Emily Taggart picked up the loose ball four yards out and drilled it inside the near post.
Michigan appeared to have a first-half goal, but Wake Forest's Karli Shilling cleared the ball off the line. Off a Wolverine corner kick, Emily Schmitt (Troy, Mich./Athens HS) triggered the ball in to Beitel. Beitel played the ball to Mari Hoff (Canton, Mich./Salem HS), who flicked the ball over the goalie from three yards out, but Shilling was waiting by the back post to head the ball away.
Wake Forest advances to face the Clemson-Marquette winner next weekend in the third round of the NCAA Championship.
