EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior All-America candidate Emily Schmitt's (Troy, Mich./Athens HS) 65th-minute rocket into the upper corner carried the University of Michigan women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over the host Northwestern Wildcats on Sunday (Oct. 10).
Schmitt's goal, her fourth of the season and second in as many games, gave the senior 51 points for her career as she became only the sixth Wolverine to eclipse the 50-point mark.
Goalkeeper Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) made seven saves on the afternoon in earning her 10th victory of the season. In doing so, Stewart established a new Michigan record with 27 career victories, one more than her predecessor, Jessica Jones (1995-98), and tied her own school record of 10 wins in a season, originally set last season.
Michigan (10-3-1, 7-0-1 Big Ten) opened the scoring 3:31 into the half as Kacy Beitel (Midland, Mich./H.H. Dow HS) netted her seventh goal of the season. Beitel, who is 5-2-12 in the last seven games, beat the Northwestern goalie from the top of the box.
The Wildcats (2-10-1, 0-6-1 Big Ten) stormed right back, scoring 41 seconds later on a Brooke Bell header. Bell gave Northwestern a 2-1 lead in the 56th minute with another header.
The Wolverines battled back and freshman Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) provided the equalizer at 61:45. Marie Spaccarotella (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) drew an assist on the play, sending a pass into the center of the box, where Crumpton finished it from eight yards out.
The Wolverines return to action next weekend when they conclude the Big Ten regular season with a 5 p.m. CDT game at Minnesota (Oct. 15) and a noon CDT game at Wisconsin (Oct. 17).
