ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 11th-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team suffered its first Big Ten Conference loss of the season Sunday (Oct. 11), falling 4-2 to No. 6 Penn State at Ocker Field. The loss drops Michigan to 4-1 in the conference and creates a three-way tie for first place between Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State with five games remaining in the conference schedule.
Penn State scored two goals in each half and became the first team this season to score four goals against the Wolverines. Michigan had several opportunities in the game, but Penn State goalie Jamie Smith made several key saves, including one a penalty stroke midway through the second half.
Michigan's Jessie Veith (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) scored her sixth goal of the season to tie the score 1-1 midway through the first half, but Penn State rebounded to score three consecutive goals to put the game out of reach. U-M freshman Catherine Foreman (Happy Valley, South Australia/Westminster School) scored her first career goal with 16:43 left in the game but the Wolverines could not sustain the comeback.
"We are disappointed with the loss, but it's not the end of the season," said Michigan head coach Marcia Pankratz. "Hopefully when we go down to Happy Valley (Oct. 25) we can settle the score."
"Losing was not in our game plan," said senior captain Loveita Wilkinson (New Castle, Del./William Penn HS), "but there is too much at riding on this season to let this one game get us down."
Michigan will play its next three contests on the road, beginning with a 1 p.m. match on Sunday (Oct. 18) at Michigan State.
