
Michigan Falls to No. 16 Yale at Home

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 6 University of Michigan women's lacrosse team fell 11-6 to No. 16 Yale in its home opener Saturday (Feb. 28) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The Bulldogs (4-0) led wire-to-wire as the Wolverines (3-2) cut the lead to one twice in the first half but were unable to complete the comeback after a five-goal third quarter from Yale.
Junior Emma Bradbury led the Michigan offense with three goals, while Caroline Byrd added two assists. Michigan dominated the draw, 13-6, with Emma Burke winning nine draw controls.
Defensively, Jordyn Harrison recorded four caused turnovers and one ground ball, while Grace Callahan scored a goal, picked up three ground balls and caused two turnovers. Taylor Cullen added two caused turnovers and two ground balls, and Elizabeth Johnson made eight saves in goal.
Yale opened the scoring three minutes into the contest before Johnson made back-to-back saves in goal, and Harrison forced a key caused turnover to keep Michigan within one. With just over six minutes remaining in the quarter, Yale added its second goal, and the Wolverines were unable to convert on a free-position opportunity as they entered the second quarter trailing 2-0.
The Bulldogs opened the second quarter with a goal before Bradbury netted two of her own to bring Michigan within one. The Maize and Blue looked to tie the game minutes later, but the goal was waved off as Yale extended its lead to 5-2 with two straight goals with 4:49 left in the half.
The Wolverines pushed the pace late in the half as Callahan pump-faked off a pass from Calli Norris and scored with 2:46 remaining. Burke won the ensuing draw, and Norris converted off a pass from Byrd to bring U-M within one, 5-4, at halftime.
The third quarter belonged to Yale as it added four goals and kept Michigan scoreless to take a 9-4 advantage into the final 15 minutes at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The Wolverines attempted a comeback in the fourth quarter as Bradbury completed her hat trick with 12:50 left to play. Michigan was unable to string together multiple goals, and Yale outscored U-M 2-1 in the final seven minutes to secure the 11-6 victory.
U-M continues its home schedule Friday (March 6) when it hosts Central Michigan at 4 p.m. at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. The game will be streamed on B1G+.
