Wolverines Defeat USC for Eighth Big Ten Win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team used a 13-0 run to open the fourth quarter, erasing a five-point deficit in a 73-67 victory over USC on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 25) at Crisler Center.
Michigan had five Wolverines score in double figures, led by Olivia Olson with 24 points and eight rebounds. Mila Holloway added 13 points, eight assists and six rebounds, while Syla Swords (10), Brooke Quarles Daniels (10) and Ashley Sofilkanich (10) combined for 30 points. U-M shot 48.4 percent from the field and forced 21 USC turnovers, resulting in 23 points off turnovers. Michigan also held the edge on the glass, outrebounding USC, 34-32.
The Wolverines entered the fourth quarter trailing by five after USC scored 31 points in the third to erase what had been a 16-point Michigan lead. Olson responded quickly with a fadeaway hook shot on the opening possession, trimming the deficit to three. Quarles Daniels then hit a baseline jumper to beat the shot clock before recording a steal and going coast-to-coast, forcing a USC timeout with 7:53 remaining and putting Michigan back on top, 59-58.
Sofilkanich converted a bucket out of the timeout to keep the run going, before Holloway beat the shot clock with a tough jumper in the paint. Swords followed with a triple to cap the 13-0 run. The three-pointer forced another USC timeout, with Michigan leading 66-58 with just over five minutes remaining.
USC cut the deficit to four, 69-64, with 1:13 left, but Olson answered again, knocking down a baseline jumper with 41 seconds remaining to put the game out of reach.
Michigan controlled the first half, taking a 40-27 lead into the break after leading by as many as 16 points in the opening 20 minutes. Olson scored 10 first-half points, with four other Wolverines contributing at least six.
The Wolverines pushed their advantage back to 16 early in the third quarter before USC used a 12-1 run to pull within five, 46-41, with 4:22 remaining. The Trojans continued the surge, eventually taking a 50-48 lead on a three-pointer with just over three minutes left in the quarter.
USC led by as many as six in the third, but Olson converted a three-point play in the final seconds to pull Michigan within five, 58-53, heading into the fourth quarter.
Michigan travels to Indiana to face the Hoosiers on Thursday (Jan. 29) at 7 p.m.
