FORT WORTH, Texas -- The No. 2-seeded and ninth-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team had its NCAA Tournament run come to a close Monday night (March 30), falling to No. 1 seed and third-ranked Texas, 77-41, at Dickies Arena. The Wolverines wrap up a record-tying season with 28 wins and the highest NCAA Tournament seed in program history.
Sophomores Olivia Olson and Mila Holloway paced Michigan with 11 points apiece. Olson capped her sophomore campaign by reaching double figures in every start this season. Classmate Syla Swords added eight points in her final start of the year. The game also marked the final appearances for seniors Brooke Quarles Daniels, Alyssa Crockett and Ally VanTimmeren.
After Swords opened the scoring to tie the game at two, Texas used a 10-0 run to build a 12-2 advantage heading into the first media timeout.
Olson got on the board at the free-throw line to bring Michigan within single digits, but the Longhorns closed the opening quarter by scoring 10 over the final 4:47 to take a 22-9 lead after one.
Michigan tightened things defensively in the second quarter, holding Texas scoreless for more than five minutes. Despite the defensive effort, the Longhorns maintained control and carried a 34-21 lead into halftime.
Olson scored Michigan's first basket of the third quarter at the 7:12 mark to cut the deficit to 11, but the Wolverines would get no closer. Texas pulled away down the stretch to secure the win and advance to the Final Four.
Michigan closes its season after rewriting multiple program records, including total points (2,880), scoring average (82.3 points per game) and Big Ten victories (15). The Wolverines also posted 17 home wins -- the second-most in program history — highlighted by two NCAA Tournament victories at Crisler Center.
