ANN ARBOR, Mich. --Â Lilley Bosley scored her first career goal late in the first half, but the University of Michigan women's soccer team dropped its Big Ten home opener to USC, 2-1, on Thursday night (Sept. 18) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines (3-5-1, 0-1-1 Big Ten) held USC (4-2-1, 1-1-0 Big Ten) to nine shots, its second-lowest total of the season, while generating six of their own. However, the Trojans broke through in the 23rd minute and again in the 66th to secure the victory.
Elle Ervin sparked the U-M attack with the game's first two attempts, and the Wolverines, facing a one-goal deficit, thought they had pulled level in the 31st minute when Ervin finished from close range. The goal was overturned after video review, and USC maintained its advantage until Bosley converted a right-footed strike in the 45th minute to tie the match at halftime.
Michigan continued its push after the break, recording two shots on target in the opening eight minutes of the second half. Gabrielle Prych and Ella Jablinskey added dangerous crosses into the penalty area as the Wolverines pressed forward, but the Trojans regained the advantage in the 66th minute, going up 2-1. Despite 90-minute efforts from defenders Campbell Jewell, Vickie Jones and Ellie Fife, U-MÂ could not find another equalizer.
Michigan will return to U-M Soccer Stadium on Sunday (Sept. 21) for a 1 p.m. matchup against No. 4 UCLA. The contest will serve as Senior Day and will be streamed live on B1G+.
