ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A goal from No. 4 UCLA in the third minute proved to be the difference in the University of Michigan women's soccer team's 1-0 loss to the Bruins on a rainy Sunday (Sept. 21) afternoon at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines (3-6-1, 0-2-1 Big Ten) honored 11 members of their senior class prior to the first-ever matchup between the two programs.
After withstanding early pressure from Michigan, the Bruins (6-2-1, 2-0-1) converted a one-on-one breakaway three minutes into the contest, netting the only goal of the game.
The Wolverines were whistled for four offsides in the contest, disrupting their attack, which managed only three shots overall, including just one in the second half.
In her first career start, Beanie Harshe provided an early spark, slipping through the UCLA backline in the 10th minute for Michigan's first threatening opportunity, which was broken up by an offsides call.
Adi Walick nearly converted on U-M's lone shot on target in the 23rd minute, forcing a diving UCLA save that earned the Wolverines one of their two corner kicks in the game.
The remainder of the first half was played to a stalemate, with each team registering just two shots. UCLA opened the second half by dominating possession and producing the first four shots on goal.
Twice, excellent goalkeeping from Sophie Homan turned away dangerous chances from the Bruins, with the senior coming off her line to disrupt crosses and corner kicks.
With 10 minutes left in regulation, Michigan pushed forward with attacking pressure from Jenna Lang and Elle Ervin before being whistled for its fourth offside of the game, ending the comeback bid.
The Wolverines will next travel to Lincoln on Thursday (Sept. 25) to face Nebraska at Barbara Hibner Stadium. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. CT on B1G+.
