LINCOLN, Neb. -- Senior forward Kali Burrell orchestrated an early second-half surge as the University of Michigan women's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over Nebraska on Thursday (Sept. 25) night at Barbara Hibner Field. Senior goalkeeper Sophie Homan tallied a career-best nine saves for the Wolverines, who picked up their first Big Ten win of the season and handed the Cornhuskers their first loss of 2025.
Burrell was a constant threat on the wings all night, playing a part in both Michigan (4-6-1, 1-2-1 Big Ten) goals. In the 47th minute, she served a cross that found Gabrielle Prych, who slotted in her team-leading fifth goal of the season to even the score at 1-1.
Just over 30 seconds later, Burrell collected a through ball from Jenna Lang, used quick footwork to create separation, and rifled home the game-winning goal from the top left corner of the box.
Homan's six second-half saves preserved the lead and maintained Michigan's unbeaten record in Lincoln, improving to 6-0-1 all-time on the road against Nebraska (5-1-5, 0-1-3 Big Ten).
Michigan's defense was tested early, as Nebraska recorded the first eight shots of the game while the Wolverines struggled to maintain possession in the opening 15 minutes. With 10 minutes left in the first half, Homan made a highlight-reel save on a 20-yard blast, but the rebound was tapped in to give the Cornhuskers a 1-0 halftime lead.
After Prych and Burrell put the Maize and Blue in front to start the second half, Homan took over, saving seven of the next eight Nebraska shots, with the only other attempt missing the target. In the 67th minute, she couldn't fully control a Cornhusker corner that leaked over her head, but a last-second clearance from Aniyah League was upheld by VAR to protect Michigan's advantage.
While Nebraska registered the final four shots of the match, only two were on target, and both were handled by Homan to secure three points for Michigan on the road.
The Wolverines return home on Sunday (Sept. 28) at 1 p.m. to host Minnesota at U-M Soccer Stadium. The match will be streamed live on B1G+.
