SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team held strong for 70 minutes, but three clinical finishes on a trio of set pieces proved to be the difference in a 3-0 loss to No. 6 Notre Dame on Thursday (Aug. 28) at Alumni Stadium.
Ella Jablinskey led all Wolverines (2-3-0)Â in the physical contest with two shots on goal, while keeper Allison Karpovich logged 45 minutes of action in her U-M debut.
Michigan shocked the Fighting Irish (3-0-1), taking control of the game with offensive pressure from the first kick. Abby Zugay threatened the home side with a blocked shot in the box in the first two minutes, also helping to earn the first corner and free kick of the game for U-M.
With Notre Dame pinned in its defensive third for the first 10 minutes, the first score of the game came against the run of play when a Fighting Irish forward leaked behind the Michigan backline to connect on a header.
A shot on goal from Jablinskey in the 20th minute was one of two in the first half for the Wolverines, while gritty defense from Ellie Fife thwarted multiple Notre Dame chances to double its advantage.
The best opportunity of the game for Michigan came just before halftime, when Campbell Jewell found space to play a cross to an unmarked Jablinskey. The streaking forward could not contact the cross, and U-M went into the break down 1-0.
The Wolverines again controlled the pace of play coming out of the second half, while Karpovich looked steady in her first minutes in maize and blue.
Much like the first half, Notre Dame added to its lead by finishing set pieces in the 71st and 74th minutes to put the Irish up 3-0 and put the game out of reach for the Wolverines, who put just one shot on target in the second stanza.
Michigan returns home for the first time in two weeks on Sunday (Aug. 31) to take on Western Michigan at 1 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium. The showdown will be streamed live on B1G+.
