
Michigan Rolls Past Akron to Advance to NCAA Tournament Second Round

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team defeated Akron 17-6 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday (May 9) at Martin Stadium.
With the win, the Wolverines are headed to the second round for the fourth straight season and will take on host No. 3 Northwestern at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday (May 11) at Martin Stadium. The contest will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Eight Michigan players scored a goal in the victory, with Calli Norris tying a career best with five goals. Jane Fetterolf recorded her third career hat trick and added an assist for four total points. Jill Smith tallied four points to break her standing Michigan single-season points record, bringing her total to 79, while Kaylee Dyer had three points with one goal and two assists.
Senior Julia Schwabe also had three points with one goal and two assists, and Emma Bradbury scored twice.
Freshman Truus van Wees tied Akron's draw-control total, winning a career-best 10 draws, while Smith had five.
Defensively, Megan Minturn and Jordyn Harrison each had two ground balls and one caused turnover, while Erin O'Grady made six saves in the first half and Maya Santa-Maria made two in the second half.
Michigan opened the game on a 5-0 run, including a hat trick from Norris, in the first quarter to get out to a fast lead.
Akron scored its first of the game to open the second quarter before the Wolverines answered with three straight goals in just over two minutes to extend their lead to 8-1. The Zips added a second goal, and Michigan got the goal back when Bradbury grabbed a ball inside the 8-meter and fired a shot into the back of the cage, bringing the U-M lead back to seven with under four minutes remaining in the half.
Each team added one final goal in the closing minutes, and Michigan took a 10-3 lead into the halftime break. U-M had seven goal scorers with five goals coming from Norris (three) and Bradbury (two). Van Wees stepped in on the draw and won three, while O'Grady made six saves.
For the second straight quarter, Akron started the scoring, but Norris scored her fourth goal, Fetterolf added two and Smith scored one as Michigan took a comfortable 14-5 lead into the final stanza.
Norris opened the final quarter with her fifth goal, which started a running clock for the remainder of the game. Michigan added two final goals in the last 13 minutes to advance to the second round.
