EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 13 University of Michigan women's lacrosse team saw its 2025 schedule come to an end with a 15-7 loss to No. 3-seeded Northwestern on Sunday (May 11) at Martin Stadium.
Senior Jill Smith closed out her career on a 36-game point and goal streak, notching her 11th hat trick of the season with all three goals coming in the fourth quarter. Senior Kaylee Dyer added two assists to become the third Wolverine in program history to surpass 200 career points, finishing with 201. Senior Julia Schwabe led the Michigan offense with five points on two goals and three assists.
Freshman Emma Burke won seven draw controls, while Dyer and Smith each caused two turnovers. In goal, senior Erin O'Grady made 11 saves, marking her 12th game of the season with double-digit stops. She ends her career as Michigan's all-time wins leader with 25.
Northwestern (17-2) struck first with two early goals, but Michigan responded when Dyer fed Emma Bradbury from behind the cage to cut the deficit to one with 10:30 remaining in the first quarter. NU added a third goal, and an overturned call initially gave the Wolverines a defensive stop, but the Wildcats tacked on another in the final minute to hold a 4-1 lead after one.
Michigan held NU to just one goal in the second quarter while adding two of its own. Calli Norris capitalized on a free-position shot, and Schwabe scored on a low finish to pull the Wolverines within two. U-M entered halftime trailing 5-3, with O'Grady making six saves and the draw unit winning five controls in the opening half.
Northwestern opened the third quarter with a quick goal to go up 7-4. Schwabe responded with her second goal to again bring Michigan within two, but the momentum shifted as the Wildcats scored six unanswered goals to build a 12-4 advantage entering the fourth.
Smith scored to open the fourth quarter, but Northwestern added three more goals to trigger the running clock. Smith netted two more goals in the final three minutes to secure her hat trick, but the deficit was too large to overcome as Northwestern advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
The Wolverines wrapped up the 2025 season with a 13-7 overall record. Michigan earned a program-record eight Big Ten honorees and set multiple team and individual records, including Smith becoming the all-time career points leader and O'Grady claiming the program wins record.
