ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Behind a seven-inning no-hitter from Tate Carey, the University of Michigan baseball team defeated Akron 13-0 on Tuesday afternoon (April 8) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Carey led Michigan (18-14) with a complete-game no-hitter and struck out four. He allowed one walk to the leadoff batter in the seventh, then induced a fielder's choice and a double play to complete the program's first no-hitter since 1994. Offensively, five Wolverines had multiple hits, with Cole Caruso and Jeter Ybarra each tallying three. Caruso and Benny Casillas both recorded their 200th career hits, while Ybarra hit his third home run of the season.
Akron (9-23) was retired in order in the first, and Michigan followed suit. Carey recorded his first strikeout to open the second and forced two flyouts to end the inning.
Michigan scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second. Caruso singled and moved to third on a hit from Ybarra. Noah Miller followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Caruso and give U-M a 1-0 lead.
Carey kept the Zips off the board in the third and fourth, retiring six straight. In the bottom of the fourth, Michigan sent 13 batters to the plate and scored eight runs on five hits. Caruso opened the inning with a triple—his 200th career hit—and scored on the next pitch as Ybarra homered to left center. Four straight Wolverines reached base, including Casillas, who drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in a run. Brayden Jefferis added a sacrifice fly, Mitch Voit had an RBI single, and Casillas scored on a wild pitch. Caruso recorded his second hit of the inning to bring home Voit, and Miller added another sacrifice fly to score Colby Turner from third.
Both teams went scoreless in the fifth, and Carey struck out the side in the sixth. Michigan added four more runs in the bottom half, all with two outs. Ybarra doubled, and after a walk to Miller, Tyler Inge singled to score two. Casillas followed with his 200th hit, driving in Inge, and Jonathan Kim added a pinch-hit single to score Greg Pace Jr.
In the seventh, Carey issued a leadoff walk but forced a fielder's choice and then a 5-4-3 double play to complete the no-hitter. He faced the minimum 21 batters in the seven-inning game.
Michigan will return to action on Wednesday (April 9) with a midweek game against Oakland. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m., with live streaming on B1G+.
