
Michigan’s Big Ten Tournament Run Ends in Semifinal Loss to Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 12 University of Michigan women's lacrosse team saw its 2025 Big Ten Tournament run come to a close as it fell to No. 7 University of Maryland, 13-10, in the semifinal contest Friday (April 25) at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.
Seniors Kaylee Dyer and Julia Schwabe each tallied hat tricks for the Wolverines (12-6), while Jill Smith had three points with two goals and one assist and Peyton Shreves scored a pair of goals.
Freshman Emma Burke led the draw control unit with eight wins, while Ava Class added five draw control wins for Michigan against the Terrapins (14-4).
In the cage, Maya Santa-Maria made 10 saves against the high-powered Maryland offense, and Jordyn Harrison picked up two ground balls.
It was a quarter of runs as Maryland scored the first three goals of the game before Michigan answered with two straight from Schwabe and a free-position goal from Dyer to knot the game at 3-3 entering the second quarter.
Maryland opened the second quarter with two goals, but U-M responded with a pair of its own as Shreves capitalized on a free-position attempt and Dyer fired one in from in front of the cage to tie the game at 5-5 with 7:45 left in the half. The Terrapins outscored Michigan 3-1 in the final six minutes of action to take an 8-6 lead into the halftime break.
Dyer finished the first half with three points (two goals and an assist), while Schwabe added two goals for Michigan. Burke won six draw controls, and Santa-Maria made six saves in the cage.
Maryland struck first out of the halftime break, but Dyer answered with her third of the game to keep the Wolverines within two with 13:20 remaining in the third quarter. U-M and Maryland traded goals again before the Terrapins closed the quarter with two straight to take a 12-8 advantage into the final 15 minutes.
Smith opened the fourth quarter scoring by running downhill herself and cutting the Michigan deficit to three. On the ensuing draw, Smith picked up the ball and passed it up to Shreves, who caught high and fired into the top half of the cage to bring U-M within two with 12:30 remaining.
Michigan looked to cut the lead to one, but a goal was overturned on a review in the final minute of play as Maryland ran out the clock and secured the win.
U-M will now await selection to the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Selection Show is scheduled for Sunday, May 4 at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
