
Smith Becomes Michigan Career Points Leader in Rivalry Win at No. 21 OSU

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team used a 10-1 run in the second half to secure a 14-7 victory over No. 21 Ohio State on Thursday night (March 27) at OSU Lacrosse Stadium.
The Michigan defense did not give up a goal for more than 33 minutes as the Wolverines (7-3, 2-1 Big Ten) scored nine straight to lock up the win.
Senior Jill Smith became the Michigan career points leader on a goal to kick off the scoring in the fourth quarter, recording seven points (three goals, four assists) -- all in the second half -- to bring her career total to 207. She passed Caitlin Muir, who recorded 203 points from 2018-22.
Seniors Kaylee Dyer and Julia Schwabe each added four points, with Dyer scoring four goals and Schwabe adding one goal and three assists. Junior Calli Norris recorded a hat trick, while Ava Class, Taylor Cullen and Emma Bradbury scored one goal each.
Defensively, Grace Callahan had two ground balls and Cullen had one while adding one ground ball. Senior goalie Erin O'Grady notched 10 saves in the cage for her eighth double-digit-save effort of the season and sixth straight game with 10 stops or more.
On the draw, Emma Burke won six while Class and Smith each won four draw controls. The Wolverines outdrew the Buckeyes 15-8 overall.
Ohio State (8-2, 1-2 Big Ten) was the first to light up the scoreboard, but Michigan answered with a 3-0 run -- including two goals from Norris and a pair of assists from Schwabe -- to take a 3-1 lead into the second quarter.
The Buckeyes brought themselves within one to start the second quarter before Class capitalized on a free-position opportunity to bring the U-M lead back to two with 13:04 left in the half. It was all OSU for the remaining 13 minutes, scoring four straight goals to go into the halftime break with a 6-4 lead.
Michigan won the draw control battle in the second half 8-3 with three wins each from Class and Burke, while Smith picked up two.
U-M swung the momentum in the final eight minutes of the third quarter. Smith assisted on goals from Dyer and Bradbury to tie the game at six with 4:05 left. Smith recorded her third point of the quarter on a free-position goal with just over two minutes left as Michigan took a 7-6 lead into the final 15 minutes of play.
Smith became the Michigan career points leader with the first goal of the fourth quarter, and Norris recorded a hat trick less than five minutes later to extend the U-M lead to 9-6 with just over seven minutes to play.
Dyer netted back-to-back goals before Smith found Schwabe to close out a 9-0 run and bring the Michigan lead to 13-6 with 53 seconds remaining.
Both teams added one more goal in the final minute as U-M secured the decisive victory following an offensively dominated second half.
Michigan returns to U-M Lacrosse Stadium on Sunday (March 30) at 3 p.m. when it welcomes Penn State for a contest that will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
