ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Four players from the University of Michigan men's soccer team were named to the All-Big Ten second team, the conference announced Thursday (Nov. 13). Defenders Will Baker, Matthew Fisher and Nolan Miller received recognition along with midfielder Shuma Sasaki.
Nicholas Cassiday was named Michigan's Big Ten Sportsmanship award honoree.
Baker started every match for the Wolverines and logged 1,519 minutes on the pitch, the most of any outfield player. The junior scored his first career goal against Detroit Mercy on Oct. 28 and chipped in two assists.
Fisher started 16 matches and was a key piece in a Michigan defense that allowed just 13 goals in the regular season. The junior was effective on the attacking end of the pitch, dishing out four assists, which was second on the team in the regular season.
Miller started at center back in all 17 matches for the Maize and Blue and was the leader of its stout defense. On offense, Miller scored twice and added two assists for a total of six points.
Rounding out the Michigan all-conference honorees is Sasaki, who made a strong impression in his first season in Ann Arbor. The graduate student scored three goals, including the game-winner against Bowling Green on Sept. 2, and chipped in two assists. Beyond the box score, Sasaki was a catalyst for the Michigan attack, drawing multiple fouls in the box to earn penalty kicks for U-M.
Cassiday was a critical part of the Wolverine offense at the right midfielder position. The senior tied for the team lead in the regular season with five assists and scored his first goal in three seasons against Detroit Mercy on Oct. 28.
