ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team gave up a goal in the first minute of the second half and could never find the equalizer, falling 1-0 to Rutgers on Thursday night (Sept. 26) under the lights at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The difference-making goal for Rutgers (8-1-1, 4-0-0 Big Ten) came in the opening minute of the second half, as Ashley Baran took the ball down the right side and fired from the just inside the box to find the back-left corner of the net.
Michigan (2-8-1, 1-3-0 Big Ten) racked up four corner kicks in the second half and three shots but could not put anything on goal following a scoreless first half for both teams. The Michigan defense and backline was stellar throughout the game, yielding just eight total shots to the Scarlet Knights and goalkeeper Stephanie Sparkowski making a pair of saves in goal.
Michigan put up five shots in the first half, four on frame, but could not break through. U-M's best chance came when Abby Zugay's chip from long range almost found the upper-right corner in the 15th minute, but the RU goalkeeper got a hand on it to keep the match scoreless.
Neither team scored in the first half, with Rutgers getting off just two shots to Michigan's five in the first 45 minutes.
Michigan completes a three-game homestand on Sunday (Sept. 29), hosting No. 11 Ohio State at 1 p.m. Limited tickets remain, and fans are encouraged to wear blue as part of the "Blue Out the Buckeyes" promotion.
