
Michigan Falls to Penn State in Back-and-Forth Big Ten Tournament Battle

OMAHA, Neb. -- The No. 4-seeded University of Michigan baseball team fell for the first time in the 2024 Big Ten Tournament, taking a 9-5 loss to No. 8-seeded Penn State on Thursday night (May 23) at Charles Schwab Field.
The Nittany Lions (28-23) took the a 1-0 lead in the second inning on and a double and single, but left a pair stranded. Michigan saw its first baserunner of the contest in the third inning when Will Rogers singled in the third, but the Wolverines were unable to score.
Michigan (31-27) grabbed the lead in the fifth on three pitches. Cole Caruso hit a one-out double on the first pitch he saw and Rogers delivered a two-run homer to left field two pitches later to give U-M a 2-1 advantage. PSU went ahead in the home half of the frame, scoring twice to take a 3-2 lead.
Michigan threatened in the seventh inning with three hits in the inning, but the potential game-tying run was cut down at the plate when Rogers was thrown out trying to score from second on a Jonathan Kim single.
The Wolverines once again used the long ball to reclaim the lead in the eighth inning. After Stephen Hrustich and Collin Priest opened the frame with a pair of walks, Voit launched a 422-foot home run to left field to put U-M in front 5-3. PSU responded with a six-run bottom of the eighth, with four of those runs coming via a grand slam, to take a 9-5 lead.
Michigan stranded its only baserunner in the ninth, and Penn state went on to defeat the Wolverines.
Ricky Kidd (3-4) took the loss after allowing six rus (four earned) over three innings in relief of starter Chase Allen, who gave up three runs on seven hits and struck out three in 4.1 innings of work. Rogers went 3-for-3 at the plate to collect his first three-hit game of the season.
Michigan will face top-seeded Illinois in an elimination game on Friday (May 24) at Charles Schwab Field. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. CDT, and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
