
Michigan Falls in Overtime to No. 15 Johns Hopkins in Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinal

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team saw its Big Ten Tournament run come to an end in a 10-9 overtime to No. 15 Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon (April 27) in a quarterfinal matchup at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The Wolverines (14-3) put together a five-goal run that spanned just over 14 minutes to come within one, 7-6, of the Blue Jays with 8:04 left in the fourth quarter. Johns Hopkins (11-6) pushed its lead back out three with back-to-back goals. With two minutes on the clock, U-M continued to put together a comeback with goals from Katharine Merrifield and Kaylee Dyer to knot the game at nine and forced overtime.
After U-M missed on its free-position opportunity and the two teams switched ends of the field, JHU won the draw and scored the game-winning goal to take the 10-9 victory.
Caroline Davis led the Michigan offense with four points, including three assists, while Dyer netted two goals, including the game-tying goal.
Maddie Burns paced the defense with five caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Annabelle Burke had three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Grace Callahan had three ground balls and Erin O'Grady made nine saves on the day in the cage.
Neither team was able to generate much offensive pressure in the opening quarter as Johns Hopkins took a 1-0 lead into the second quarter. The Blue Jays added three to their tally before Michigan put an end to the run to come within three, 4-1, with 2:52 left in the half. JHU added one final goal to take a 5-1 advantage into the halftime break.
The Blue Jays continued to build on their lead to open the second half, netting two goals. Following the second JHU goal, Montemarano won the draw control and started five-goal run that spanned into the fourth quarter to bring Michigan within one, 7-6, with just over eight minutes to play.
Johns Hopkins called a timeout to reset and came out to score two more goals to extend its lead to 9-6 with 4:40 left in the game. The Wolverine offense got hot once again Davis came around the front of the cage and buried a goal before she found Merrifield to bring Michigan within one with 1:47 remaining in regulation. U-M won the ensuing draw and Dyer took the ball across the front of the cage and ripped a shot as she fell to the ground to knot the score at nine.
The Blue Jays won the final draw of regulation, but the Michigan defense shut them down and sent the game into overtime.
The Wolverines again won a crucial free position to start the overtime period and earned a free-position shot that went high to keep the game knotted. At the three-minute switch in the overtime period, Johns Hopkins won the draw control and scored on its possession.
