
Double-Digit Scoring Run Paces Michigan to Victory at Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team put together a 12-0 run over the span of 22 minutes to run to an 18-11 victory over Marquette on Sunday afternoon (March 24) at Valley Fields.
Junior Jill Smith scored a career-high seven goals and tallied a U-M single-game record nine points, while Kaylee Dyer recorded a hat trick and an assist. Junior Julia Schwabe was the third Wolverine to tally a hat trick on the day and Caroline Davis had three points with two assists and a goal. In total, eight Michigan players contributed to the U-M goal tally against Marquette.
Michigan won the draw control battle 18-14 with Smith and Lily Montemarano each winning six and Josie Gooch winning three.
Defensively, Grace Callahan had three caused turnovers and three ground balls and Jordyn Harrison had two ground balls.
Michigan went on a 4-0 run that spanned 3:20 to take the early lead, but a Marquette timeout preceded back-to-back Golden Eagles goals. Smith scored off a pass from Davis with three minutes left in the first quarter to carry a three-goal lead, 5-2, into the second 15 minutes of play.
Marquette opened the second quarter on a 5-0 run to go up 7-5 on the Wolverines before head coach Hannah Nielsen called a timeout with 6:23 remaining in the half. Michigan came out of the timeout and Schwabe scored to bring U-M within one of Marquette.
The Golden Eagles added two more goals to their tally in the closing six minutes to take a 9-6 advantage into the halftime break.
Marquette continued its run in the third quarter with two more goals to go up 11-6 before U-M put together a four-goal run, including two free-position goals and a goal with just 10 seconds left to come within one at 11-10 headed into the final quarter of action.
U-M continued what would become a 12-0 run over 22 minutes to take the 18-11 victory and improve to 11-0 on the season.
Michigan returns to U-M Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday (March 30) when it takes on No. 2 Maryland at noon. The game will be the first top-three showdown between the two squads.
