
Michigan Battles but Unable to Overcome No. 6 Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team took a 17-10 road loss to No. 6 Stony Brook on Friday afternoon (Feb. 17) at LaValle Stadium.
The Wolverines (1-2) fought to the very end as it scored three straight goals in the closing two minutes but it could not overcome an early deficit against the Seawolves (1-0).
Sophomore Jill Smith recorded her third straight hat trick of the season, while Lily Montemarano netted back-to-back goals and Erin Garvey added a pair of goals. Sophomore Kaylee Dyer led Michigan with three assists and Josie Gooch assisted on both of Montemarano's goals.
U-M won the draw control battle 16-15 as Gooch and Smith had four wins each and Montemarano and Maddie Burns won three apiece.
Annabelle Burke opened the scoring just two minutes into the first quarter, but Stony Brook quickly responded with four straight goals of its own to take a 4-1 advantage over the Wolverines. Michigan cut the SBU lead to two with less than one minute remaining in the first quarter as Smith ripped in a free-position opportunity to close the quarter.
The Seawolves opened the second stanza on a 3-0 run before Kaley Thompson found Smith for a one-timer in front of the cage to bring U-M within four, 7-3, with just over 10 minutes to play in the half. Stony Brook ended the half on a 4-0 run to head into the halftime break with an 11-3 lead.
Smith scored two first-half goals and added four draw control wins, while Burns added three draw control wins in the first 30 minutes of action.
U-M struck first in the third quarter with Smith's third tally of the day, but once again SBU put together a four-goal run to take a 15-4 lead and start a running clock. Thompson put an end to the running clock with 1:04 left in the third as she scored her first goal of the game off a pass from Julia Schwabe to pull U-M within 10 at 15-5.
Michigan scored three goals over the final three minutes but it was not enough to overcome to deficit as it fell 17-10 to the Seawolves.
The Wolverines will open their 2023 home season on Sunday (Feb. 19) when they host Harvard at noon at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
