
Wolverines Run Past Harvard in Home Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team earned the 17-10 victory over Harvard in its 2023 home opener at U-M Lacrosse Stadium Sunday afternoon (Feb. 19).
The U-M (2-2) offense was led by sophomore Jill Smith for the fourth consecutive game as she scored a team-high five goals, while four other Wolverines netted a pair of goals including Peyton Shreves, who notched the first of her career. Graduate student Erin Garvey also added three points with two goals and one assist and Julia Schwabe had four points with two goals and two assists.
Michigan won the draw control battle, 18-13, with Maddie Burns winning a team-best six draws and Smith earning five, while Garvey and Lily Montemarano had three draw control wins each. Defensively, the Wolverines had eight caused turnovers and 10 ground ball pickups.
Harvard got out to a quick 3-0 advantage over the Wolverines before Michigan went on a 6-0 run, including a Smith's hat trick to take a 6-3 lead into the second quarter of play.
Michigan continued its run extending its lead to 9-3 on goals from Schwabe, Garvey and Annabelle Burke. The Crimson came back with three goals of their own to come within three but Garvey ended the half with her second goal of the game to give the Wolverines a 10-6 lead heading into the halftime break.
U-M opened up the third quarter with a pair of goals from Smith and Jane Fetterolf and Harvard added one goal to its tally with 15 minutes to play at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. Michigan outscored the Crimson 5-3 in the final quarter to earn the victory and improve to 2-2 overall on the season.
U-M will be back in action Sunday (Feb. 26) as it takes on Central Michigan at 1 p.m. at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
