ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team used two goals in the final 10 minutes of play to push past Cleveland State on Wednesday night (Oct. 25) at U-M Soccer Stadium in a non-conference contest.
The Wolverines (3-5-7) took the early lead over the Vikings (3-8-4) and rallied from behind in the second half to earn a 3-2 win. Freshman Alex Waggoner scored the game-winner in the 85th minute as he collected a ball from just two yards out and tapped it past the keeper for the U-M victory.
Senior Bryce Blevins notched three points for Michigan with a penalty kick goal to tie the game at 2-2 in the 82nd minute and added an assist on Waggoner's game-winner. Senior Bode Saul celebrated his senior night by scoring his first collegiate goal, which gave Michigan a 1-0 lead in the first half off an assist from Riley Ferch.
Michigan threatened with two straight shots before Ferch sent in a cross to the head of Saul, who finished the header into the far bottom right corner of the net in the 25th minute of action. Less than five minutes later, CSU capitalized on a corner kick to equalize the match at 1-1.
With the game tied at 1-1 heading into the halftime break, the Vikings were the first to strike and take a 2-1 advantage over the Wolverines in the 66th minute, but Michigan continued to fight as it maintained possession for most of the half.
In the 82nd minute, Blevins brought the ball into the 18-yard box and forced a handball that led to a penalty kick goal to knot the score at 2-2. Michigan carried the momentum for the remainder of the game as Blevins served a ball to the far right post of the net for Waggoner to collect and finish, allowing U-M to earn a 3-2 victory over Cleveland State.
The Wolverines conclude their 2023 regular season on Sunday (Oct. 29) when they take on No. 21 Northwestern at 12:30 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium.
