RALEIGH, N.C. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team advanced to the NCAA Raleigh Regional final by placing second in its second-round session, scoring a 197.400 Thursday evening (March 31) inside Valvano Center at Reynolds Coliseum.
The Wolverines (25-2) finished second behind No. 14 UCLA, which scored a 197.800 and also advanced to the four-team final on Saturday (April 2). Maryland finished third with a 196.025, and North Carolina placed fourth at 195.150.
As a team, Michigan scored a season-high 49.550 on the balance beam, the second-highest beam score in program history.
Senior Natalie Wojcik tied for the uneven bars title with a 9.950, while Gabby Wilson defended her floor exercise title with a 9.950. Naomi Morrison placed third in the all-around with a 39.525 and earned a career-high 9.925 on the beam as the leadoff in the final rotation.
Michigan put together a solid first rotation led by a 9.950 from Wilson and a 9.900 from senior Abby Heiskell. The Wolverines scored a 49.350 to sit in second behind UCLA, which recorded a 49.400 on the vault in its first rotation.
Heiskell fired up the vault rotation, scoring a 9.900 in the third spot, and Morrison followed it up with a 9.900 of her own for the Maize and Blue. Sierra Brooks and Wilson closed out the vault rotation with a 9.850 and a 9.875, respectively, as Michigan scored a 49.375 in its second rotation of the evening. U-M (98.775) remained in second behind UCLA, which took a running score of 98.875 into the third rotation.
Wojcik (9.950) and senior Abby Brenner (9.925) led Michigan to a 49.125 on the uneven bars in the third rotation as the Wolverines went into the final rotation maintaining their second-place position with a running score of 147.950.
U-M locked up its spot in the final with a season-best 49.550 on the balance beam behind four scores of 9.900 or better. Morrison led off the rotation with a career-best 9.925, and Wilson followed with a 9.900. Brooks led the Wolverines on the beam with a 9.950, and Wojcik closed out the rotation with a 9.925.
Michigan will compete for an NCAA regional title Saturday (April 2) at 5 p.m. at Valvano Arena at Reynold Coliseum. Joining U-M and UCLA will be first-session qualifiers No. 11 Missouri and No. 22 Iowa. The top two finishers Saturday will earn a trip to the NCAA Championships.
