Michigan Women's Gymnastics: 2021 NCAA Champion
Punctuated by scintillating performances from its final three balance beam competitors, the University of Michigan women's gymnastics team won its first NCAA title in a dramatic finish at the 2021 NCAA Championships in Fort Worth, Texas. Head coach Bev Plocki's squad posted the best team score in program history, 198.250, to edge out Oklahoma (198.1625) for the crown.
It all came down to one final routine, as every other event had finished. After big scores from Sierra Brooks (9.9625) and Natalie Wojcik (9.9875) put Michigan in position to take the title, Abby Heiskell stood alone on the beam with all eyes upon her. Needing a 9.850 for the Wolverines to capture their first championship, Heiskell delivered with a 9.925.
U-M joined an exclusive club, becoming just the seventh school ever to capture an NCAA women's gymnastics title, and the Wolverines did it with the third-best score in NCAA Championships history. The all-around trio of Brooks (39.775), Wojcik (39.7375) and Heiskell (39.725) all posted scores of 39.725 or better to take the top three spots in Michigan NCAA all-around history.
The 2021 Wolverines became the first U-M team to put up score of 198, and they ended up doing it four times in their last seven meets. Michigan finished with a 29-2 overall record for a .935 winning percentage. Five Wolverines earned All-America honors: Brooks, Heiskell, Wojcik, Naomi Morrison and Gabby Wilson. All five also received All-Big Ten Conference honors, while Wojcik (vault) and Wilson (floor exercise) claimed event titles at the Big Ten Championships.
