ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 1-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team used two season-high scores to notch a 197.925-196.775 victory over No. 15 Michigan State on Sunday (Jan. 30) at Crisler Center.
Michigan (4-0, 2-0 Big Ten) scored a season-best 49.550 on the uneven bars and followed it up with a season-high 49.375 on balance beam. U-M took the top five spots on the vault and uneven bars, while winning the floor exercise and earning the second-place spot on the beam.
Junior Sierra Brooks earned her first all-around title of the season, scoring a 39.725, while taking home the vault, uneven bars and floor titles with career highs.
Brooks shared the floor title with fellow junior Gabby Wilson and senior Natalie Wojcik as the trio closed out the meet with three straight 9.950s, tying career highs for each. In all, Michigan had 10 scores that tied or bested previous career highs. Jenna Mulligan made her collegiate debut on vault and floor, and Reyna Guggino and Naomi Morrison continued to improve on previous bests.
Brooks earned her first event title of the afternoon, tying a career-best 9.975 on the vault, while Wilson and Abby Brenner followed it up with matching 9.875s to finish second and help Michigan to a 49.425 in the first rotation.
The uneven bars lineup did what they do best with four scores of 9.900 or better to score a season-best 49.550. Once again, the Wolverines were led by an event win from Brooks, who tied a career-best 9.950 in the anchor spot with her stuck landing, while Abby Heiskell and Brenner led off with back-to-back 9.900s and Wilson scored a 9.925 with a stuck landing for her second second-place finish of the day.
Michigan earned its second straight season-high score, posting a 49.375 on the balance beam behind a 9.900 from Wojcik and Wilson. Guggino earned a career-high 9.875., and Morrison notched a career-best 9.850 in the leadoff spot as both sophomores stuck their landings on the dismount.
U-M was rolling on floor, as five gymnasts earned career bests with Mulligan making her debut and scoring a 9.850. Following Mulligan, Wojcik, Brooks, and Wilson closed out the meet with three straight 9.950s, which tied a career high for the trio of gymnasts and locked up the win for the Wolverines.
The Wolverines head back out on the road when they head to Piscataway, N.J., to take on Rutgers on Friday (Feb. 4) at 7 p.m. The meet will be streamed live on B1G+.
