ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Tying a Michigan record with four perfect 10s, the No. 1- ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team recorded a program record 198.525 -- the sixth highest score in NCAA history -- to earn a decisive victory over Rutgers and Alaska on Friday night (Feb. 4) at Jersey Mike's Arena.
Rutgers (5-7, 1-2 Big Ten) placed second overall with a 195.675 and Alaska (0-6) finished with a team score of 191.825.
Michigan's score of 198.525 is the sixth-highest score in NCAA history and the highest score since 2004. Michigan is just one of six teams to score a 198.500 or better, joining Georgia, Oklahoma, Stanford, UCLA, and Utah.
Michigan also broke the program vault record with a team score of 49.875, the second highest in NCAA history, topping the previous best of 49.825 set in 1997 against Utah State.
The Wolverines notched four perfect 10s in the meet, which ties a Michigan record set in 1997 against both Oregon State and Utah State. Michigan's three 10s on the vault ties the U-M record as set against Utah State in 1997.
Junior Gabby Wilson got Michigan started as she recorded her first career perfect 10 on the floor exercise in the third rotation. The perfect score anchored the floor rotation and sent U-M to the vault with the meet locked up. However, the Wolverines were not done. Reyna Guggino became just the second gymnast in NCAA history to lead off a rotation with a 10 and joins Grace Glenn (UCLA), who accomplished the feat in 2020.
Following Guggino, senior Natalie Wojcik earned her fourth career perfect 10 and her third on vault, with her last coming at the 2021 Big Ten Championships. Senior Abby Heiskell then posted Michigan's fourth straight perfect 10 of the night and the first of her career.
Wojcik had a career night, tying a Michigan all-around record with a score of 39.825. The Douglasville, Pa., native joins elite company -- Elise Ray, Sarah Cain and Beth Wymer. Wojcik took home four titles for the second time this season, winning the all-around and balance beam outright, while sharing the vault and uneven bar titles with Heiskell.
In all, Michigan swept the event titles with Wojcik leading the squad. Wilson earned the floor title with her 10 and Guggino and Jacey Vore captured their first career titles. Guggino shared the vault with her 10 and Vore took home a piece of the uneven bars title with a career-high 9.925.
Michigan started off on uneven bars and got to work early, using four scores of 9.900 or higher to tie a season high 49.550. Heiskell led off the meet with a 9.925 before Vore and Wojcik matched it in the final two spots with the trio sharing the title.
The Wolverines continued to impress, earning their second season high score with a 49.500 on the balance beam. Wilson earned a 9.900 in the No. 2 spot before Heiskell tied a career-high 9.925. Wojcik (9.950) closed out the second rotation with her second event title with a stuck landing as Michigan continued to lead heading into the third rotation.
Wojcik tied her career best on floor exercise with a 9.950 before Naomi Morrison put up a huge 9.975 in the fourth spot. With Wilson left to go, she earned her perfect 10 to close out the rotation and lead Michigan to a 49.600 team score.
Wilson's energy carried over to vault with Guggino, Wojcik and Heiskell earned consecutive 10s. Morrison then tied a career-best 9.975 and Wilson closed out the scoring with a 9.900 to push Michigan to a program-best 49.875 in the final rotation to cap the tri-meet victory.
The Wolverines will return to Crisler Center on Sunday (Feb. 13) at 6 p.m. when they host Penn State for their annual Flip for Chip Meet, which will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
