MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 1-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team is the first squad in the nation this season to break the 198-point barrier as it defeated No. 7 Minnesota, 198.025-197.650, on the road to kick off Big Ten play on Monday (Jan. 24) night at Maturi Pavilion.
The Wolverines (3-0, 1-0 B1G) scored a season-high 49.675 on the vault with five scores of 9.900 or better, while they tied a season-best 49.300 on the balance beam. Junior Sierra Brooks earned the beam title with a 9.950, while Minnesota took home the remaining titles with two perfect 10s on the evening. Brooks led Michigan in the all-around with a 39.700 and Gabby Wilson tied a career-best 39.625 in the all-around.
Freshman Jacey Vore came up big for the Maize and Blue as she stepped into the anchor spot on the uneven bars and scored a 9.900 in the first rotation, while Naomi Morrison had career highs on three of her four events, including her second straight 9.975 on the vault. Brooks and Wilson also tied career bests on the floor with 9.950s in the third rotation.
In her home state, Abby Brenner, along with Wilson, earned 9.900s on the uneven bars before Vore made her collegiate debut and put together a 9.900 routine to anchor and help U-M to a 49.400 in the first rotation.
Trailing slightly after Minnesota scored a 49.575 on the vault, the Wolverines went to work and had five scores of 9.900 or higher as Morrison scored her second straight 9.975 on the vault to tie a career high and place second overall. Brooks followed it up with a 9.950 and both Reyna Guggino and Wilson scored 9.925s on the vault to swing control back in favor of Michigan. With a team score of 49.625, the Maize and Blue took a 99.075-98.900 advantage over Minnesota at the halfway point.
The Wolverines continued to impress as they posted four straight scores of 9.900 or better on the floor exercise finishing off with three straight career-best 9.950s from Morrison, Brooks and Wilson. Michigan took a 148.725-147.925 advantage into the third and final rotation against the Golden Gophers.
Brooks paced Michigan on the balance beam, scoring a 9.950 to win the event. Wojcik put together a stellar routine and the team huddled together as they waited for the score to flash to see if it would push them past 198. The team's final 198.025 marked the fifth time in program history a U-M squad exceed 198.
The Wolverines will return home on Sunday (Jan. 30) to compete against Michigan State at 2 p.m. The meet is set to be featured on ESPNU.
