ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A seventh-inning error proved costly for the No. 25-ranked University of Michigan baseball team as Ohio State scored three unearned runs and the Wolverines fell 7-4 to the Buckeyes on Friday (April 9) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Tito Flores was in the middle of the action early. The Detroit, Mich., native laced a two-out RBI single in the second and fourth innings and made a diving catch on a sinking line drive to left field in the top of the fourth as Michigan took a 2-0 lead in blustery conditions.
Ohio State tied the game with two runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a leadoff triple, an RBI groundout and three singles.
It was Flores again in the sixth inning to provide Michigan momentum. First, with two outs, Clark Elliott beat out a tapper to the mound and advanced to second base on an errant throw. Flores came to the plate and the sophomore turned on a 1-1 fastball, driving a 382-foot homer high over the left-field wall and through a stiff wind blowing straight in from left field. The shot regained a two-run Michigan lead at 4-2.
Ohio State took a 5-4 lead with three unearned runs in the seventh inning, following a critical error to start the inning, two walks and a pair of two-out singles including a two-run knock from Brent Todys.
OSU tacked on two runs in the ninth inning as a leadoff walk came back to hurt with Conner Pohl delivering an RBI single to right and Todys plating another with a suicide squeeze.
In the ninth, Flores walked to lead off and went to third on a single from Riley Bertram, but OSU closer TJ Brock buckled down to avoid any trouble and earn his seventh save of the year.
Flores had three hits to lead the way for U-M, which also received multi-hit efforts from Christian Molfetta, Benjamin Sems and Ted Burton.
The Wolverines and Buckeyes will resume their series Saturday (April 10) at noon at the Wilpon Complex in a game that will be streamed live on Big Ten Network+. The start time has been moved up from its original 2 p.m. first pitch due to expected inclement weather.
