LINCOLN, Neb. -- Sophomore Danielle Wolfe scored the golden goal five minutes into the second overtime period to lift the University of Michigan women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory at Nebraska on Sunday (March 7) at Hibner Stadium.
Nebraska had a failed clearing attempt that landed on the foot of freshman Sammi Woods. Woods collected the ball and passed it back to Wolfe, who fired a shot into the upper-left corner past the leaping Nebraska keeper for the double-overtime victory.
Michigan (2-1-2, 2-1-2 Big Ten) outshot Nebraska, 22-8, with six shots on frame.
The Cornhuskers quickly generated offense, scoring in the second minute of to take an early 1-0 lead. Michigan had a few early opportunities but could not find its first goal until Lily Farkas made a short pass inside the 18-yard box to freshman Kacey Lawrence, who took the one-timer for her first career goal.
However, Nebraska (1-2-1, 1-2-1 Big Ten) responded less than a minute later to take a 2-1 advantage into the halftime break.
The Michigan offense came out firing in the second half, taking three shots before one was blocked, leading to a U-M corner kick. Junior Raleigh Loughman sailed a ball into the middle of a scrum in which Sydney Shepherd went up and headed the ball down and into the back of the net to once again tie the score in the 61st minute.
With neither team able to score the game-winner the Wolverines played their third overtime game of the season with the score knotted at 2 after 90 minutes.
Woods was the only player to find a shot, sailing one wide in the first overtime period, and the game went to a second overtime period.
Loughman and Wolfe fired back-to-back shots with Wolfe hitting the post in the 104th minute. The ball bounced back into the 18-yard box and the Cornhuskers were unable to clear as Woods was in the right place to gather the ball at her feet and flicked a pass to Wolfe, who buried the game-winner.
Next up for U-M will be a matchup against Michigan State on Friday (March 12) at the Legacy Center in Pontiac, Mich.
