COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Ohio State to open the 2020-21 season Saturday afternoon (Feb. 20) at Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
Michigan fired off 13 shots in the season opener, putting eight on frame, while Ohio State (0-0-1, 0-0-1 Big Ten) had 22 shots with 16 on goal. Senior goalkeeper Hillary Beall made a career-best 15 saves for U-M, surpassing her previous high of 12 against Washington State in 2019.
Freshman Sammi Woods scored the lone goal for U-M in the first half, marking her first collegiate goal. Woods had a team-best five shots and put three on frame, while Lily Farkas, Nicki Hernandez and Dani Wolfe all had a pair of shots for Michigan (1-0-0, 1-0-0 Big Ten).
U-M and Ohio State played an even game until the 30th minute when Woods took the ball down the middle of the field and ripped it into the bottom-left corner of the net to put Michigan up, 1-0, in the first half. Following Woods' goal, OSU fired off three straight shots with Beall making the save on two of them to maintain the Wolverine lead going into the halftime break.
Ohio State found the equalizer in the 68th minute before Beall saved back-to-back free kicks to keep the game tied at 1 in the second half. Following the Buckeye goal, U-M was issued a red card and played a player down for the remainder of the contest. With time winding down, neither team found the go-ahead goal, and the teams started the season with an overtime contest.
The Buckeyes were the first to strike in the first overtime period as Beall came up with the save before Meredith Haakenson went to the top corner with a shot that was saved by OSU in the Wolverines' only opportunity of the overtime period.
In the second overtime, Ohio State was issued a red card to even the field at 10 players a side. The Buckeyes' keeper came up with a save on Woods' shot minutes later to end the game in a 1-1 draw.
Michigan will be back in action Thursday (Feb. 25) when it welcomes Minnesota to the Great Lakes State. The Wolverines and Golden Gophers will play a 2 p.m. contest at the Legacy Center in Brighton, Mich.
