BRIGHTON, Mich -- A pair of first-half goals from senior Nicki Hernandez lifted the University of Michigan women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Minnesota on Thursday afternoon (Feb. 25) at the Legacy Center.
Hernandez scored two goals in a contest for the second time in her career and the first time since the 2018 campaign.
Junior Skylar Anderson had the assist on Hernandez's first goal and starting keeper Hillary Beall made six saves on the afternoon.
Hernandez paced the Wolverines with back-to-back goals in the first half, the first going into the bottom-right corner off a shot from 25 yards out in the seventh minute and the second firing off the keepers hands into the upper-third of the net in the 10th minute of the match.
The Golden Gophers looked to respond, putting shots on frame in the 15th minute and 18th minute, but Beall collected both shots as the Wolverines headed into the halftime break with a 2-0 advantage.
Minnesota's best opportunities came in the second half, finding a shot in the 64th and 70th minute, but Beall made diving saves on both to maintain the shutout.
Beall went on to make one more big save in the 78th minute to lock up her first shutout of the 2020-21 season.
The Wolverines will be back in action Monday (March 1) when they take on Wisconsin at UWS Sports Complex in Pontiac, Mich., at 11 a.m.
