ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team will compete this Saturday (Jan. 23) at Indiana's Gladstein Invitational in what will be the team's first foray on the road of this 2021 season.
Not only will Saturday's competition against Indiana, Michigan State and Purdue be a ramping up of the indoor season for the squad's sprinters, mid-distance runners and field event athletes, it also will serve as a final tune-up for next Saturday's Big Ten Cross Country Championships for the select distance runners.
Most of the standout performers from last weekend's Simmons-Harvey Invitational will make the trip looking to build on the momentum from their debut efforts. Among them are the nation's second-ranked miler in newcomer Tom Dodd (mile) and multi-event specialist Ayden Owens (60-meter hurdles, 60 meters and shot put) in preparation for his first heptathlon at Michigan next week.
Also suiting up to compete are returning Big Ten Indoor Championships scorers in John Meyer (shot put), Josh Zeller (60-meter hurdles), Mason Mahacek (60-meter hurdles and shot put), Heath Baldwin (60-meter hurdles and shot put), and Job Mayhue (60-meter hurdles).
Making his official 2021 debut after helping to pace Dodd's mile last weekend will be multiple-time Big Ten scorer Anthony Berry, who has scored at multiple Big Ten Championships in his career.
That group and more will compete in a men-only session beginning at 1:30 p.m., which is expected to conclude at 4 p.m. A women-only session will precede the men's action starting at 10 a.m. in order to keep crowd density and exposure points within the facility to a minimum.
Spectators will not be allowed into the facility as a precautionary measure and to allow for more room for participants from separate teams to space themselves out within the building.
Fans will be able to follow along with a live stream of the action. Regular updates will also be provided via live results and the official social media channels of Michigan track and field.
Featured Events
• Mile (2:10 p.m.) -- Berry has the fastest mile personal record of any student-athlete on the roster at 4:01.77, and he is set to make his first full effort at the distance in 2021 on Saturday. He served as the pacer for the 4:03.27 Michigan debut last weekend for Dodd, who will once more race the mile this weekend. They will face off with Indiana's Matthew Schadler, who has a 3:58.45 mile to his name.
• Shot Put (3:15 p.m.) -- Meyer gets a rematch with former Big Ten champion Jalil Brewer of Purdue in his signature event. Brewer got the better of Meyer last weekend as they finished second and third behind Andrew Liskowitz, but Meyer finished fourth at last year's Big Ten Indoor Championships to Brewer's eighth. Additionally, heptathletes Owens, Mahacek and Baldwin will get reps in before their heptathlon debuts next weekend. Owens is coming off a career-best 13.97m (45-10).
• 60-Meter Hurdles (1:30 p.m. prelims, 2 p.m. final) -- Michigan's dynamic group of hurdlers should take center stage in this event. Owens will look to build on his 7.87 debut from last week, and likewise for Zeller after a 7.98 opener. Mayhue also aims to approach the sub-8.00 second form he has shown in each of the past two seasons.

Team Outlook
• Season Preview
• Returning Individual Big Ten Indoor Championships scorers: Meyer (shot put), Mason Mahacek (heptathlon), Josh Zeller (60-meter hurdles), Heath Baldwin (heptathlon), Job Mayhue (2019 60-meter hurdles), Aho (2019 3,000 meters), Will Landowne (2019 3,000 meters)
• After a full season away from competition post-transfer in 2020, Owens is poised to make his much-anticipated debut in 2021. While at USC, Owens was a first-team All-American in the indoor heptathlon and posted the second-best decathlon score ever by an NCAA freshman (8,130 points). With a full year of training in the Michigan system now under his belt, he is looking to pick up where he left off.
• Shot putter Meyer will pick up the mantle of being Wolverines' top thrower, at least until 2020 NCAA shot put leader Andrew Liskowitz returns for the outdoor season. Meyer is on the cusp of national prominence in his own right, having placed fourth at Big Ten Indoors in 2020 and finished the season No. 26 in the country.
• Led by cross country All-Americans Meyrer and Aho, the distance squad will be pulling double-duty to compete in indoor track while preparing for a truncated cross country season from January through March. The two All-Americans will be looking to translate their cross country success to the track, alongside the likes of multiple-time Big Ten Championships scorer Anthony Berry, former high school national champion Nick Foster and a deep stable of talented runners. Joining the group from the international scene are Englishman Tom Dodd and Australian Oli Raimond, who are expected to be immediate contributors and potential conference scorers.
• Michigan returns one of the country's best hurdles duos in Zeller and Mayhue, both of whom made the 2020 Big Ten Indoor 60-meter hurdles final. The Brit Zeller dazzled in his debut 2020 campaign as he climbed all the way to No. 3 in school history, while Mayhue qualified for the Big Ten final for the second time in as many seasons. They could be joined by Owens in select open races, given his strength in the event. Also returning is 4x400 relay All-American Hartman, who is primed for an individual breakthrough in 2021. Chief among the newcomers is PhD student Austin Lin, an accomplished 400-meter runner from Northeastern.
