ANN ARBOR -- In its first road competition of the 2021 indoor season, the University of Michigan men's track and field team posted numerous performances at Indiana's Gladstein Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 23) that set the Wolverines up favorably for the back half of their winter season.
John Meyer led the way with one of the nation's best shot put performances so far in 2021, while the sprints corps also put together victories in the 400-meter and 60-meter hurdles events thanks to newcomer Dubem Amene -- who led a 1-2-3 finish in the event -- and Josh Zeller, respectively.
Below the top-line results, Michigan's combined-event corps of Ayden Owens, Mason Mahacek and Heath Baldwin turned in efforts that bode well for their impending heptathlon debuts.
Meyer claimed a measure of revenge on former Big Ten champion Jalil Brewer of Purdue, who beat Meyer last weekend at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational, as he tossed a career-best 19.09m (62 feet, 7.5 inches) in the finals to claim the victory.
As of publication, only eight other men in the NCAA have surpassed 19 meters in 2021.
On the strength of a furious final 150 meters, first-year collegian Amene led All-American Vail Hartman and transfer Austin Lin to a sweep of the top three spots at 400 meters.
Amene was beaten to the halfway point by Indiana as the sprinters broke from their respective starting lanes to along the inner rail, biding his time around the penultimate curve. He used the momentum of the curve to slingshot into a lead he held for the last 140 meters en route to a 48.37.
Hartman made his move wide around Indiana on the final curve, and Lin followed in close pursuit coming off the curve. The two would finish with identical 48.66 times, with Hartman just edging out Lin -- who achieved a new personal record in the effort -- at the line for second.
One of last year's top newcomers, Zeller, turned in the top effort of his sophomore campaign to date, winning the 60-meter hurdles in a season's best 7.95 seconds. Job Mayhue was third in 8.23.
Joining Amene and Lin as impactful newcomers was Tom Dodd, who posted the Wolverines' fastest mile for the second weekend in a row. This time, Dodd was the narrow runner-up as he clocked 4:03.32, just off his debut effort from the Simmons-Harvey Invitational. He was followed in third by multiple-time Big Ten scorer Anthony Berry (4:06.67) in his first action of the winter.
Heptathletes Owens, Mahacek and Baldwin were all strong in their final tune-ups before next weekend's U-M B1G Multi-Event Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 29-30).
The trio's shot put results were exceptionally encouraging, as Owens launched a 14.85m (48-8.75) that exceeded his previous personal record from last weekend by nearly a full meter and Baldwin uncorked a 13.66m (44-9.75) throw that earned him a PR by nearly a meter, as well. Mahacek came within centimeters of his best at 11.15m (36-7).
On the track, Owens was the runner-up at 60 meters in 6.89, just .14 seconds off his personal best, while Baldwin was fifth in the hurdles in 8.32 and Mahacek ran a career-best 8.95 in the prelims.
Elsewhere in the field, Cassidy Henshaw just missed the victory in the high jump, tying for the day's best height at 2.06m (6-9) but losing on the tiebreak.
Michigan will return home two two consecutive meets at the U-M Indoor Track Building on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 29-30) for the B1G Multi-Event Invitational and Feb. 6 for the Wolverine Invitational. The cross country team will be competing Jan. 30 at the Big Ten Championships in Shelbyville, Ind.
