WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Five members of the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team raced to improve their season- and career-best times at the Boiler-Make-It NCAA Last Chance meet on Sunday (March 8) at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center. The swimmers in attendance included seniors Alex Martin and Jacob Montague, and sophomores Mason Hunter, AJ Bornstein and Eric Storms.
The meet served as the final opportunity for men's swimmers to improve odds of getting an individual berth to the NCAA Championships. The official list of selections will be announced on Wednesday (March 11).
Of the five Michigan swimmers on Sunday, Martin and Montague both stood out. Martin went 46.82 in the 100-yard backstroke, dropping eight-tenths of a second off his time from the Big Ten Championships last week. It was a new career-best performance and also the fastest performance of any Wolverine in the 100-yard backstroke this season.
Montague had two cracks at the 100-yard breaststroke. He went 52.98 in his first attempt, then went 52.69 in the second, a new season-best swim.
Hunter (53.09) and Bornstein (55.32) also swam the 100-yard breaststroke, while Bornstein doubled up in the 200-yard breaststroke (1:57.11). Storms swam both the 100-yard backstroke (47.80) and 100-yard freestyle (45.28).
All five of the team's divers will attempt to qualify for the NCAA Championships at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships next Thursday through Saturday (March 12-14) in Lexington, Kentucky.
