ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team (8-7) will begin a 12-game homestand by welcoming Canisius (3-11-1) to the friendly confines of the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, for a four-game set Friday through Sunday (March 13-15).
Friday's home opener will begin at 4 p.m., with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday starting at 11 a.m. The series will wrap up Sunday at 1 p.m.
• U-M is 4-0 all-time against Canisius, last hosting the Golden Griffins for a four-game series in 2016. The Wolverines outscored the Griffs, 27-5, by scores of 9-0, 6-2, 3-0 and 9-3.
• This weekend's series kicks off a stretch of 12 consecutive home games for Michigan, which also hosts Purdue (March 20-22), Western Michigan (March 25), Nevada (March 27-29) and Bowling Green (April 1).
• Michigan looks to get back on the winning track after a 2-3 week to wrap its trip to California. The Maize and Blue defeated Cal, 5-0, and took the middle game of a three-game set against No. 24 Pepperdine with a 7-4 victory.
• Redshirt freshman Steven Hajjar got the win in Michigan's victory over No. 24 Pepperdine, tossing six innings and striking out a career-high 10 while limiting the Waves to just two runs. The performance earned Hajjar his second Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor of the season on Tuesday (March 10).
• Though coming out on the losing end in two-of-three at No. 24 Pepperdine, Michigan's starting pitchers racked up more total strikeouts (24) than it had in any other three-game stretch this season. Hajjar led the way with 10, while juniors Blake Beers and Jeff Criswell added seven each.
• The Michigan quintet of sophomores Walker Cleveland and Keaton Carattini, freshman Jacob Denner and redshirt seniors Joe Pace and Benjamin Keizer combined to shut out Cal on March 5. It marked the second time this season the Wolverines shut out a Pac-12 opponent, also shutting down Arizona State, 5-0, earlier this season.
• Junior Jordan Nwogu continues to lead the Michigan offense in batting average, turning in a .353 mark on the campaign. The outfielder also hit his team-leading second home run of the season to lead off the series finale against No. 24 Pepperdine. It was the fifth leadoff home run of Nwogu's career.
• Fellow junior Jack Blomgren leads the team with a .444 on-base percentage on the year. While hitting .286. The shortstop also has reached base 16 times via free pass (11 walks, five hit-by-pitch). Blomgren hit his first home run of 2020 against No. 24 Pepperdine, and is second on the team in runs scored (11) and doubles (three).
• The freshman foursome of Clark Elliott, Jimmy Obertop, Ted Burton and Joey Velazquez played a major role in the Wolverines' 7-4 victory over No. 24 Pepperdine (March 7). Elliott went 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored, while Obertop, Burton and Velazquez each tallied 2-for-4 days with a double and scored a run.
• Freshmen Cameron Weston leads the team with two saves on the season, while freshman Jacob Denner, sophomore Jack White, redshirt sophomore Isaiah Paige, and redshirt senior Benjamin Keizer have all picked up a save this season.
• During the Wolverines' non-conference schedule this season, U-M has taken on five teams that played in the 2019 NCAA Postseason: Vanderbilt, Arizona State, Connecticut, Stanford and Cal.
• U-M is scheduled to face 10 teams that made NCAA Tournament appearances in 2019. Additionally, the Maize and Blue will play 25 games at the Wilpon Complex in 2020.
Scouting the Golden Griffins
• Canisius has started the season slow, owning a record of 3-11-1. The Golden Griffins won their road series at Marshall (Feb. 29 - March 1), taking down the Thundering Herd by scores of 3-2 and 11-9 before tying the series finale, 2-2. Since then, Canisius was swept at Radford (March 6-8).
• The Golden Griffins played their first 15 games away from home, playing at a combination of road and neutral-site games along the way. After four in Michigan this weekend, they will head to Melbourne, Florida, for four games against Maine.
• Only one Canisius player holds a batting average over .300, as Andy Leader turns in a .311 average with a .829 OPS. The senior has hits in all but one game he has played in on the season, and has also tallied three doubles, two triples and a home run.
• Though not official, Michigan likely will face a combination of starters Will Frank, Kyle Warner, Andrew Fron and Rockne Siedel this weekend. Frank is the Golden Griffins' leader in earned-run average, boasting a 3.22 mark, while Warner has the best record among the starters at 2-1. Nine of Cansius' 11 losses have come at the hands of the bullpen.
