ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team suffered a 77-49 setback against No. 17 Maryland on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 12) at Crisler Center.
Sophomore Naz Hillmon led the Wolverines with 15 points and pulled down five rebounds, while senior Kayla Robbins had 11 points and eight rebounds to go along with two blocks and three steals in 26 minutes.
Senior Akienreh Johnson added seven points for U-M and sophomore Amy Dilk had five rebounds and two blocks. Michigan forced 17 Maryland turnovers and turned them into 11 points.
After scoring off the tip, the Michigan offense hit a lull and ended the first quarter down by nine points, 21-12. The Wolverines looked to close the gap with Robbins scoring out of the break, but Maryland answered with a three-pointer.
Michigan was unable to find an offensive run in the second quarter, committing eight turnovers in the stanza that were turned into six Maryland points, and the Wolverines headed into the locker room trailing, 37-21, at halftime.
Robbins led U-M in the first half with six points and six rebounds, while Johnson added five points.
Robbins continued to be a force on both ends of the floor, as she took a charge before driving the ball down the lane to score two with 3:21 remaining in the third quarter to cut the Maryland lead to 47-31. On the ensuing possession, the senior raced down the floor and blocked what looked to be a wide-open Terrapins layup to put the ball back into Michigan's hands.
The Wolverines ended the third quarter going 4-for-5 from the field, including a drive from Hillmon, as they went into the fourth quarter trailing, 55-36.
Michigan went on a 9-0 run early in the fourth quarter thanks in part to forcing four Maryland turnovers and capped it off with three Hailey Brown free throws to come within 16, 65-49.
The Terrapins stopped the Michigan run and the Wolverines could not string together any further scoring streaks the rest of the way.
U-M will hit the road for a mid-week contest at Wisconsin on Thursday (Jan. 16) in Madison at 7 p.m. CST. The game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
