MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team used a fast start and a balanced scoring attack in a 68-56 road win over Wisconsin on Thursday (Jan. 16) at the Kohl Center.
Sophomore Naz Hillmon recorded her fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 21 points on 8-for-13 shooting and 14 boards. Classmate Amy Dilk turned in 12 points, six rebounds and two assists, with senior Kayla Robbins (12 points, eight rebounds) and junior Hailey Brown (12 points) rounding out Michigan's double-figure scorers. Michigan held a 48-23 advantage on the glass, with senior Akienreh Johnson grabbing a career-best 11 boards. U-M turned scored 27 second-chance points, compared to UW's four.
Michigan raced out to a 9-2 lead and forced a Wisconsin timeout with 7:51 left in the first period after a Johnson putback. The run also featured buckets from Dilk and Hillmon, along with a triple from Brown.
The Wolverines held a 20-8 lead after the first 10 minutes, as six different Wolverines found the scoring column.
Michigan held Wisconsin scoreless for the final 4:11 of the second quarter, hitting the halftime break with a 35-19 lead after Hillmon beat the buzzer with a lefty jumper in the paint. U-M held a 28-13 advantage on the glass in the first half, with Hillmon (11) and Dilk (10) reaching double digits in scoring in the first 20 minutes.
U-M continued to keep the lead around 20 points, going up, 40-21, on Robbins' three-point play with 8:00 to go in the third period. The Wolverines took their largest lead of the game, 46-24, on a Hillmon putback with 4:34 left in the third quarter.
Robbins beat the third-quarter clock with a step-through layup on the right side, pushing Michigan's lead back to 16 points, 50-34.
Robbins converted a three-point play with 5:40 left in the fourth quarter, grabbing an offensive rebound and making the putback. Her made free throw pushed Michigan's lead to 21 points, 61-40.
Michigan's lead never dipped below 12 points the rest of the way.
U-M will complete its two-game road swing Sunday (Jan. 19) at Nebraska. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. CST, and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
