AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team put together a strong showing on the first day of the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday (June 5) at Mike A. Myers Stadium, as it earned three All-America honors and a spot in the 400-meter hurdles final. Michigan put two points on the board courtesy of a pair of eighth-place finishes in the hammer throw and shot put.
Thrower Joe Ellis earned the second outdoor All-America honor of his career, throwing 69.26m (227 feet, 3 inches) in the hammer to finish eighth. Ellis notched his best throw of the afternoon in his third attempt of the day as he claimed the first All-America honor of the weekend for the Wolverines.
Ellis is one of just five Wolverines to be a two-time first team All-America honoree in the hammer throw, as he joined the company of Roderick Cox (1932-33), Holly Campbell (1927, '30), Wilford Ketz (1927-28) and Harry Hawkins (1925-26).
Fellow thrower Andrew Liskowitz earned Michigan's other point after he finished eighth in the shot put with a throw of 19.52m (64-0.5). Liskowitz fouled his first attempt before recording his best throw during his second attempt. He fouled on the third throw but was in eighth place after three throws to head to the finals.
His second throw held up through the next three rounds, which sealed eighth place and Michigan's first top-eight finisher in the event since 1957 when Dave Owen won the NCAA title. Liskowitz earned his second All-America honor in the event and the first first-team nod.
Taylor McLaughlin became the first three-time 400-meter hurdles finalist in program history, as he punched his ticket to the finals with a career-best time of 49.28. McLaughlin took an early lead and never let up, winning his heat for the automatic berth to the finals. He will enter Friday's (June 7) competition as the No. 2 seed. Roland Amarteifio was Michigan's other participant in the race and finished 24th with a time of 52.95.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Desmond Melson, Ian Davis, Alex Schwedt and Vail Hartman made the most of its NCAA Championships debut, picking up All-America second team honors with a time of 3:07.09. The quartet originally finished 16th by just .04 seconds, but a disqualification moved them up to 15th.
Senior Jack Lint posted three career-best marks through the first five events of the decathlon and finished the day with 3,997 points to sit in seventh place. His career-best marks came by jumping 7.11m (23-4) in the long jump on his third attempt, throwing 13.66m (44-9.75) in the shot put and running 48.60 in the 400-meter run to end the day.
Action at the NCAA Outdoor Championships continues Thursday (June 6) for Michigan as Lint competes in the final five events of the decathlon starting at 1 p.m. CDT.
Michigan will conclude its week at the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Friday with McLaughlin participating in the 400-meter hurdles.
