IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Led by silver medalist Taylor McLaughlin and two-time individual scorer Roland Amarteifio, the University of Michigan men's track and field team closed out the final day of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships on Sunday (May 12) with a sixth-place team finish.
McLaughlin was the runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles and Amarteifio was fourth in that event and eighth in the 110-meter hurdles. Michigan also got points from true freshman Job Mayhue in the 110-meter hurdles as he finished seventh.
Amarteifio and McLaughlin closed out the day with more points as half of the 4x400 team that took sixth. The day on the track also started with a seventh-place finish in the 4x100 relay.
With 54.5 total points on the weekend, the Wolverines edged out in-state rival Michigan State by 1.5 points for sixth place. Minnesota was 3.5 points back at 51, with Penn State and Wisconsin also right there at 50 and 49 points, respectively.
Host Iowa took the team title with 116 points.
McLaughlin, running just his second 400-meter hurdles race of the year and his third at any distance this spring, nearly won his third Big Ten title in his signature outdoor event. Leading for much of the way, McLaughlin found himself in a battle with eventual champion Chris Douglas of Iowa down the final 100 meters.
The defending champ could not hold off the Hawkeye, as he finished just .1 of a second off the win in a season's best 50.42.
McLaughlin earned the third silver medal of the weekend for the Wolverines, joining decathlete Jack Lint and hammer thrower Joe Ellis.
In addition to the eight team points netted by McLaughlin's runner-up finish, the Wolverines got five more from fourth-place Amarteifio. The junior rallied in the second half of the race after falling slightly off the lead pace early, picking off several competitors in the final 200 meters to come home in a near-personal-record 51.37.
The effort was Amarteifio's second scoring performance of the day, as he put points on the board in both the 110-meter hurdles and 400-meter hurdles for the second-straight year.
Amarteifio was eighth in the 110-meter hurdles in a season's best 14.16 (+0.9m/s) for an additional point, just behind Mayhue's seventh-place 14.14 (+0.9m/s), good for two points. Both Mayhue and Amarteifio also scored in both this outdoor 110-meter hurdles final and the indoor 60-meter hurdles final.
Michigan's other points on the day also came by way of the sprints, as the 4x100 relay team of Stephen Hagen, Ian Davis, Joe McCarthy and Desmond Nicholas finished seventh overall in that event to kick off the track program with two points.
Michigan got the win in the first of two sections in the 4x100, clocking 40.84 as Nicholas broke through a bunched-up field on the anchor leg with a strong carry of the baton to bring it home.
Amarteifio and McLaughlin would return one last time to bookend the sixth-place 4x400 relay. Like their 4x100 relay teammates, the 4x400 squad posted a win in the first of two sections in a season's best 3:09.71. Amarteifio and Vail Hartman ran the first two legs, giving the stick to Davis in third. By the end of his leg, Davis had clocked a quick 46.31 to hand off to McLaughlin in second.
Battling Illinois' Doug WIlson, McLaughlin eventually pulled ahead and secured the win with a 46.72 carry to close things out.
