BRIGHTON, Mich. -- The No. 13 University of Michigan women's lacrosse team continued its perfect start to the season, scoring 15 of its 19 goals in the second half to earn a 19-9 victory over Cincinnati on Monday afternoon (March 4) at the Legacy Center.
With the perfect 7-0 start, the Wolverines tied a program-best seven wins in a season, set by the 2018 squad under coach Hannah Nielsen.
Three Wolverines had career days as both Lilly Grass and Maggie Kane scored five goals for the Maize and Blue, while Caitlin Muir added four of her own to combine for 14 of Michigan's 19 goals. This season, Grass has recorded six multi-goal games, while Kane and Muir have two multi-goal games each. Senior Adriana Pendino also had a multi-goal performance with a pair, and Erin Daly, Molly Garrett and Erin Garvey each scored one goal for the Maize and Blue.
Michigan outshot Cincinnati, 38-30, and was 5-for-8 on free position attempts while not allowing Cincinnati to convert on its three free position attempts. The two teams tied the draw control battle, 15-15, and the U-M defense forced the Bearcats into 25 turnovers.
In goal, Mira Shane and Alli Kothari split time, with Kothari earning her first win of the season after playing the final 30 minutes and making five saves.
The Wolverines had a slow start in the first half as the two teams exchanged goals before Muir netted her second straight of the game to put Michigan up 4-3 with 9:19 remaining in the opening 30 minutes. The lead did not last long as Cincinnati won the draw control and Alyssa Adams raced down the field to knot the score at 4-4 just 32 seconds later. Adams scored one final goal in the half to allow the Bearcats to take a 5-4 lead into the locker room.
Cincinnati again struck first in the second half, going up by two goals a mere 23 seconds into the period. Kane answered the Bearcat goal with her second of the day, but Cincinnati found a goal to continue to lead by two, 7-5.
Down by two, the Wolverine offense got hot, rattling off six straight goals over the span of eight minutes to take the lead for good with an 11-7 advantage with 18:33 to play.
Kylie Nause scored back-to-back goals looking to bring the Bearcats back into the match, but the Michigan offense was too much to contain as it closed out the contest on an eight-goal run, including three goals from Grass and two from Kane.
The Wolverines will be back in action at U-M Lacrosse Stadium Friday (March 8), when they welcome Kent State to town. First draw is set for 5 p.m. [ Tickets ]
